When in Haileybury, the first visit should
be the Haileybury Heritage Museum. It was founded in 1983 to commemorate the
Great Fire of 1922, the Haileybury Heritage Museum (formerly the Haileybury Fire
Museum) offers a wide range of written articles and artifacts of its historical
background. The heritage and history of Haileybury comes alive through the
extensive photograph collection and artifact display. Haileybury's recorded
history dates back from 1889 when it's founder Charles Cobbold Farr began his
settlement. One of the main attractions of the museum is a completely restored
streetcar that was part of the relief package sent North following the Great
Fire of 1922. Along with medicine, food, clothing, and building supplies, 87
streetcars were sent from Toronto to be used as relief housing for those who had
lost their homes in the fire. There is also a completely restored tug boat that
was used to move logs in log-booms (rafts) to the lumber mills. During the
summer, JUNE 1 TO LABOUR DAY WEEKEND, they are open from; - Daily 10 A.M. - 6
P.M. During the winter season, from SEPTEMBER TO MAY they are open - Daily
Monday to Friday 10 A.M. - 5 P.M. Tours Available by Appointment - Anytime.

Take a look at Devils Rock, located between
Martineau Bay and Haileybury, which is a fault cliff dated to 2,200 million
years. It has a face of 600 feet, rising 365 feet above the water level of Lake
Timiskaming. Interesting features are the scars of mining tunnels that had been
chiselled into the cliff when prospectors drilled exploration drifts from the
ice on the lake into the rock face during the silver rush era. The original name
for what is now called Devil's Rock, was "Manidoo-Wabikong" or translated into
english, "Spirit Rock" by the local Algonkian, First Nation People. To these
people, Manidoo is not an evil spirit. They believed that Manidoo needs to be
respected for it is the guardian of Lake Timiaskaming. Manidoo is more related
to the Thunderbird, which is very sacred to many First Nation People across
Canada. "Wabikong" simply means, "white cliff on the water", and refers to the
white staining of the rock by the bird droppings that has covered the face over
the years. The early native people, along with the fur traders, have always left
an offering of tobacco as they passed by Spirit Rock, to appease the Spirit
Manidoo, when they travelled upon the waters of Lake Timiskaming. It is believed
that Manidoo control's the weather on the whole area of Lake Timiskaming. When
the early Christian missionaries came into the area with the early settlers to
Christianize the First Nation People, Spirit Rock, that Sacred place to the
native people was changed to Devil's Rock to reflect the Christian beliefs that
the religion of the First Nation People was of the Devil. So Spirit Rock was
changed to Devil's Rock and has been known as such to our present day.

Rock Walk Park in Haileybury is a massive
outdoor and fascinating geological garden that will delight any rock hound. It
is a good way to spend a day or an afternoon looking at the numerous, various
samples of ores and minerials that are found in these rocks. Most of these large
rock samples are mounted on limestone pedestals, arranged along a brick pathway
that is even accessible by wheelchair. People come from all over the world as
students to the Haileybury School of Mines that is located adjacent to the Rock
Park.
Nastawgan Trails
A
NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION
The Nastawgan are the summer
and winter trails established by the Temagami Anishnabai over 6000 years ago.
Today, we take inspiration from this in our effort to create a four-season,
non-motorized trail network in the Temagami region of north eastern Ontario.
Temagami’s trails weave their way under giant pine trees and over Ontario’s
highest ridges through a beautiful northern wilderness. The home page picture is
a photo of the shoreline of Lake Temiskaming while on the Beaver Mountain Trail.
There are several short hiking trails in this area but they are mainly
accessible by canoe. The potential for non-motorized, and specifically
backpacking trails, is largely untapped. Our goal is to plan, establish,
maintain and market a Temagami-based trail network. This network will connect
Temagami’s wilderness areas and historic landmarks creating trail experiences
lasting hours, days or even weeks. Selected trails will accommodate walkers,
backpackers, cyclists, dogsledders, cross country skiers and snowshoers.
Non-motorized trails are central to making Temagami a world class recreational
tourism destination. This website will be developed and expanded over time. It
has taken the Board Members over a year to get it together. We apologize for the
delay but we did it ourselves and learned a lot in the process. Nastawgan
trails.com belongs to the members and friends. Comments are invited. The Board
thanks all those who have volunteered their time and creativity or who have made
cash donations. We have begun a long journey. We need your help! Our Link to us.
