My design can easily be adapted to any similar designed 4x5 view cameras. Pau Lope Hardwood from Brazil was used to build the back. The exposed layer of hardwood is only 3/16" thick. It's necessary to provide clearance for the film winding knob. You can't see it in the photo, but a 1/8" x 1/8" rabbet is required under the dark slide for a finger pull. It works great!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q 01. Where do I buy Pau Lope hardwood? Pau Lope is grown in Brazil, it was just hardwood that I had on hand. Any clear straight grain hardwood will work.

Q 02. Are their light leaks with your back design? The whole interior of the camera is painted a flat black. The Back frame fits into a 3/8" x 3/8" rabbet in the camera body.

Q 03. How does the Graphic Back stay flat? The back frame is made up of 3/8" high by approximately 2" wide hardwood. The width is determined by the required film opening. The glued butt joints are reinforced with 1/8" x 1" long x width of wood dimension splines. The spline grain must run at right angles from the joint seam. Clamped in a flat position for drying.

Q 04. Where and how much did you pay for the Graphic Back? The 23 Graphic back was new from old stock and purchased on eBay for about $85.00 US dollars.

Q 05. How do I adjust the back's film plane to match the Ground Glass plane? Trial and error is the best way.
