On a week away at our family cabin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, one evening I was sitting on the back deck overlooking the lake with my aunt rocking next to me. She was reminiscing about earlier years at the cabin and her honeymoon. Aunt Laura and Uncle Bud have been married for 33 years. Now that's a long time.
Many of my friends are in their early 30s and have already been married and divorced. So I asked her the big question: How could you stand to be around the same man for all of those years?
Auntie turned her head toward me, looked me squarely in the eye, and held up what I thought was the peace sign, a "V". "Two TVs," she said. "He gets his sports, you get whatever you want to see, and you stay out of each other's hair. Together, but apart. That's the secret."
Good to know. The secret to a long marriage is two TVs. Now I have the perfect wedding present.
