Freedom

The plunging depths,
Cold as ice against the
Warm skin, reach into
The soul with tendrils,
Long fingers of terror.

Fear wraps around the
Heart, choking the life
From it, releasing the
Joy that once remained
In the frozen depths.

That strangling dread,
That beast in the night,
It takes the love from
The soul and buries it
in a hill, a web, of loss.

The anxiety is never
Far away, it lurks in
Shadows, waiting to
Ambush us as we walk
Unknown in the light.

That light, the love of
One for another; that
Light that can be so
Quickly extinguished,
To never be recovered.

So we cower in the
Shadows, lost from the
World, alone in our
Permanent nightfall.
We can never be free.
