Canadian RCA, ASA, CGP, CSGA, CSPWC [1906-1980]
Born in Calgary, Alberta, in 1906, Maxwell Bates was a painter, printmaker and architect.
He is considered, along with W.L. Stevenson, an innovator of Expressionism in Canada.
Bates was a p.o.w. in Germany, where he made drawings from scraps ("Wilderness of Days").
After the war, he resumed his work as an architect in Calgary, designing St. Mary’s Cathedral.
He then went to New York and studied with Max Beckmann and Abraham Rattner.
He is often regarded as the finest modern figure portrayist in Canada.
His mediums included oil, watercolour, chalk, and pen and ink. He retired to Victoria in 1962.
His work has been exhibited in London, Paris, & Tokyo.
