Constanta
(con-STAN-tsah), situated on the Black Sea, is an important port city as well as a
charming seaside resort. It is also home to some of the most spectacular Roman artifacts
and ruins in all of Romania. The Ethnografic Museum houses an impressive collection of
costumes and other textiles from around the country, along with ceramics, beaded eggs, and
a large exhibit of painted glass icons -- a uniquely Romanian art form. |

A section of the Roman
mosaic floor discovered in 1959 in Constanta. The mosaic is nearly 2,000 years old.
Historians believe that originally it measured about 2,000 square metres in size
(approximately 21,500 square feet) and consisted of many thousands of colourful tiles.
Only a small part of it remains, protected by a museum that was built around it.
