Icing On A Spoiled Cake Icing On A Spoiled Cake

You came inside a little late
like icing on a spoiled cake,
There's nothing that your words
can do to fix
the things that were broken
the first time you left,

Bewildered faces look at you then away,
Who'll be the first to cut the cake?
Crack the shell and peek inside,
I'd be surprised if you didn't cry,

Can someone please open a window,
It's getting much too hot in here,
Passion like a burning spear,
Straight to the heart that's pumping fast
and spinning the world on the end of a string,
You could just up and leave,
but then again so could we,

You came inside a little late,
like icing on a spoiled cake,
A dog chasing a ball that hasn't been thrown,
You just couldn't make it on your own,

You wanted something else, something real,
Something more than you could feel,
You felt all that the world could inflict
until your mind and body broke and twitched,
a shuddering soul with a broken stitch,
Now you're just feeble and numb,
a finger on a loaded gun,
Put it down and cut the cake,
I take it back you're not too late.
