ARTIST STATEMENT

The beauty of abstract art is that it has no limits to your imagination. Paint one picture and other people see a variety of different things in it. I prefer pure abstracts. Pure abstraction deals with the emotional through colour and forms. To really absorb an artwork--any artwork, you should look and look away and then look back again. Just let the colours and shapes absorb you.

My paintings are mostly pure abstraction, which means the forms are not recognizable. This kind of art relies greatly on your subconscious. You can piece together the burning reds, solemn blues, passionate blacks...the circles, strange shapes and lines. Something from your past, something you saw, felt, or even heard could be linked unknowingly to a certain colour, or form. Hopefully, you get the point.

I enjoy the mysterious quality that abstract art portrays. When painting, there are no limits and endless possibilities. It is irrational, illogical, but beautiful. This is not to say that abstract art lacks meaning. At the same time that this art is non-objective, it does hold many truths in it. What the artist puts in the painting is his or her frame of mind, their naturality. Most importantly, it is the expression of individuality. Their state of being.

When I begin an idea, my goal is to create a painting that will leave the viewer feeling uplifted or emotionally cleansed, and spiritually heightened. I like the feeling of entering another world, far from chaos and industrialization. One way that I work is Automaticsm. (I didn't know Automaticsm existed, until now.) Thanks to history books, I found that Miro and others were inspired by it. It's basically a process where the artist starts by drawing lines and shapes, without thinking. It is said to reveal your subconscious. Anyways, Miro worked differently. He would start using Automatism and then halfway, he would make the lines and circles into recognizable forms. (eg. a shape that looks like an identifiable object)

Although I feel strongly about positive paintings, I also respect the deep, passionate, dark paintings that are emotionally provoking. I have to admit that I don't very much enjoy being emotionally drained--unless, I feel anger and decide to take it out on the paint and canvas. That would be very strong and provoking, which is alright.

So thanks for visiting my art web site. I'll try my best to update this every now and then, if I don't, I'm probably too busy being not busy.
