Phoenix
(rebirth)
< Previous----Next>
Many ancient cultures believed that birds were mediums for the transmission
of souls, both in birth and in death. A remnant of this belief is the answer
to a child's question of where babies come from--the stork brings them. With
wings like angels, birds also carry souls to heaven after they have departed
their bodies. Both of these themes are combined in the story of the Phoenix,
a bird who is consumed by flames every 500 years, but is reborn out of its
own ashes. Made from glazed red earthenware clay, the back of this limited
edition piece displays the artist's signature stamp and the LQP chop mark,
1 3/8" high.
