Zigzagging Serpent
(meandering rivers)
< Previous----Next>
Snakes and serpents abound in ancient mythology. When forming a circle with
its tail in its mouth, the serpent is a symbol of infinity and the cyclical
nature of the universe. It is often pictured coiled near or around a Tree
of Life, a Tree of Knowledge, or a World Tree. In this pendant, the zigzagging
serpent represents the great, meandering rivers of the earth. The earliest
Egyptian hieroglyph for water was a zigzag, and many rivers have serpent related
names. Swaying back and forth like a snake, the great rivers wind through
the land, sometimes forking off into two branches like the tongue. Made from
glazed red earthenware clay, the back of this limited edition piece displays
the artist's signature stamp and the LQP chop mark. Left to right 2 3/8"
high, 1 3/8", 1 1/4".
