Recessed Buttons
Making recessed buttons etc. You can make recessed text by using the same technique. If you are familiar with using layers it will help.
You will need to make your layer palette visible by going to View>ToolBars and checking layer palette for this tutorial as shown.

Step 1: Open a new image the size you want the button or header to be, with the following settings. Change the image size to the size you want.

Step 2: Flood fill the image with the color, pattern, or texture of your choice.

Step 3: Add a new layer (Layers>New Raster Layer...) and name it button as shown below.

Step 4: Choose your font (in this case I used Button Button), and add it to the new layer, make sure antialias and floating are checked. Leave it selected as shown.

Step 5: Add another layer and name it cutout as shown.

Step 6: Go to Image>Effects>Cutout... with the following settings and click ok.

Step 7: Add a another new layer and name it shadow as shown.

Step 8: Go to Image>Effects>Drop Shadow... with the following settings and click ok.

Your image should look like this now.

Step 9: Go to Selections>Modify>Contract.... with the following settings.

Step 10: Go to Selections>Invert, then hit your delete key on your keyboard.

Step 11: Go to Selections>Invert again. DO NOT deselect your image.

Step 12: Click on the cutout layer in the layer palette as shown.

Step 13: Go to Image>Effects>Cutout... as shown in step 6, and click ok.

Step 14: Click on the shadow layer in the layer palette as shown.

Step 15: Go to Image>Effects>Drop Shadow as shown in step 8 and click ok.
Your image should look like this now:

Step 16: If you want to add a pattern or texture to the button do so now by clicking on the button layer in the layer palette (as shown) and filling the button with your flood fill tool.  NOTE: If you do not want to fill the button with a pattern skip this step. In that case you will need to go to the button layer on the layer palette and hit your delete key on your keyboard.

Your image should look like this.

Step 17: Deselect the image by going to Selections>Select None.

Step 18: Adjust the opacity on the cutout and shadow layers in the layer palette as shown. You may vary them if you wish depending on the colors you used.

Your image should look like this now.

You can add more layers (recesses) by repeating steps 9 thru 15 if you wish.

Step 19: Go to layers>Merge and merge your layers when finished.
If you have any questions about the instructions, Please let me know and I will try to answer them.
