We aim to provide a safe place where young people can meet to address social and cultural issues, with a supportive Irish ambience. Core objectives of the Project are to provide for young people's development and support, and social interaction, in an environment which affords positive images of Irish culture. Lewisham Irish Community Centre opened in 1992, a voluntary sector body funded by Lewisham Council. This followed lobbying from local Irish people, including Councillors, the Lewisham Irish Pensioners Group and IBRG. Since the days of the Greater London Council onwards, Local Authorities have funded Irish community projects to reflect the needs and aspirations of their own Irish communities.

I fear that I have little to contribute for I do not have the experiences of that specific illness myself or a broad spectrum of views from the Carmelite perspective. I do know how our tiny new community has met and behaved toward a now clothed member who does have to manage the same illness. it is not a topic of conversation for us at meetings or outside but some of us have become much closer to and because of her, and she has gained a real sense of security that she can be herself and focus on her grow in Carmelite spitituality. html Opinions are those of the author and do not represent CIN.
