. And the one he received early in 1937, from the Republican government of Spain for a canvas for its Paris World's Fair pavilion, proved no exception. Picasso worked with relentless fury until he finished the huge canvas in less than a month. The resulting painting, Guernica, is now at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, after decades at the Museum of Modern Art. Guernica has never stopped being the emblematic painting of the horrors of war.

These two painters produced a body of work which was very similar; in many cases, it's impossible to tell the landscapes of these colleagues apart between 1908-1911. They experimented with breaking down and analyzing form -- this period is referred to as analytic cubism. Picasso used a monochromatic color scheme to paint some of his favorite subjects in this new style such as musical instruments, still lifes, and friends' portraits such as Daniel Henry Kahnweiler, 1910. Picasso's transition to synthetic cubism is demonstrated in Harlequin, 1915, which shows a more decorative and colorful approach than the analytic stage. He married dancer Olga Kolova and many of his realistic drawings and paintings of this period feature his wife and son as subjects.
