The method is Signature Tagged Mutagenesis (STM), and it works by a mechanism of transposon insertion into a bacterial genome to disrupt genes, with the hope of finding avirulent mutants. Without getting technical, this has been the focus of my research project, and the conference brought STM researchers from Europe and North America together to discuss problems and successes with the STM method. I acquired new ideas and, more importantly, received great benefit from exposure to a research conference. Speaking in front of a group of scientists was scary at first, but it was a good learning experience. After speaking about my experiences, I analyzed how other scientists gave their speeches and learned a lot from them as well. |
