The red is kept intact but given the change of colors its significance can be altered from liberty to suffering. It represents the suffering of African Americans whose blood helped to create the country that had forsaken them in civil rights. He intentionally wanted it to still be recognized as America. By changing its colors, he is examining the idea of freedom, patriotism, and the identity of America. An America, which at times recognizes a race of color not people. |
