The title of my thesis is, 'An Analysis of Dorothy Elmhirst's Promotion of the Arts at Dartington' and by this I mean both visual and applied art, having had to take the decision to leave out the dramatic arts due to the vast quantity of material held in the archive. It is through her privileged upbringing in America that her true influence can be perceived in the regeneration of Dartington Hall, with all it came to stand for in the creation of a new society. Not only are her experiences as a campaigner for social reform through her involvement with the Junior League to be considered, but most significantly, the influence of her father, William C. Whitney, in what was for her his most important role as a patron of the arts. |
