Meigs County Death Certificate Index Meigs County Death Certificate Index This index of Meigs County death certificates was extracted from the online index at the Ohio Historical Society. The index is an ongoing project of the Ohio Vital Information for Libraries Center (OVIL), and this extract is published here with their kind permission. This extract includes approximately 5200 deaths from the years 1913-1927.

The effect is visually convincing, the tiny fake hand prints accurately translating the notorious photograph of Hindley's face. Given the force of the media attention surrounding Harvey's picture, it is not difficult to believe that certain persons involved with the organisation of Sensation very much wanted the kind of publicity that Myra would produce. What was entirely lacking in all the media fuss about this picture was any intelligent discussion of its historical or cultural resonances. The work was repeatedly described as a painting of Hindley, thus neglecting the important point that it was a painting of a photograph of Hindley. Given that only a few weeks before the launch of Sensation the media were engaged in a detailed debate about the role of photography in relation to the death of the Princess of Wales, such an omission is by no means unimportant.
