Little Girl In America
A little girl awakes from a horrid dream.
Witnesses her Daddy putting a punch on her mother
She carries her teddy down the hall
Only to see the fresh bruises on her brother.
The little girl wipes the tears from her eyes
And kisses her little brothers cheek
She hopes and prays her daddy cleans up
Like he promises to do every week.
She wipes the hairs from her tear stained face
The little girl, so grown up for her age
Her bright future might not come true
If she can’t survive her Daddy’s drunken rage.
She prays to the Lord at night
“Dear God, if you are real and hear this plea
I ask you never let me awake when I fall asleep.
Let me escape to your world and forever be free.”
The Lord above hears his child’s cry
“My dear child…” he answers without a voice
“You must stay on this earth to make a difference.
Be your own hero and with this hear my voice.”
Peace overflows the young girls body
While she lays in her little bed.
She puts all faith, hope and courage into the Lord
“I trust you my Lord. Amen.”
Story about "Little Girl"
This poem was inspired by the John Michael Montgomery song "The Little Girl". I took the same basic message, but turned it around and made my own piece of American literature. Both Montgomery's song and my own poem have opened my eyes to a scary, yet faithful time in our society.
