- Somebody Else's Kids, by Torey Hayden. The author is an experienced teacher of "problem" children. This book tells about one class she taught.
- The Importance of Living, by Lin Yutang. A popular Chinese writer tells about the Chinese philosophy of living.
- Varieties of Religious Experience, by William James.
- Does it Matter? by Alan Watts.
- How Children Fail, by John Holt.
- Revolution from Within, by Gloria Steinem.
- The Night is Dark and I am Far From Home, by Jonathan Kozol.
- Rachel and Her Children, by Jonathan Kozol.
- Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia, by Marya Hornbacher. Harrowing, presumably true story of the author's struggle to live with these "eating disorders."
