In August of 1999, I was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer and told that 95% who get his cancer are dead within 5 years. Intensive, simultaneous, chemotherapy and radiation blessed me with a remission, but some survivors recommended having my esophagus cut out anyway, as prevention against recurrence.A friend gave me a sum of money and said, "Have the surgery, go to Europe, do whatever you want". I chose a 6 month solo trip to Europe to soak up as much beauty as I could, to risk a shorter life full of joy over a longer one focused on body fragility. These photographs sample the pleasure I took in beauty--a gift which I believe contributes to my continuing remission.
