Notice of May Meeting

The next meeting of the PEINA will take place in the Library of Colonel Gray Senior High School, 175 Spring Park Road, Charlottetown, on Victoria Day, Monday, May 20, 2002. The meeting time remains unchanged, 7 p.m. for the early arrivals who wish to chat and the formal session starting at 7:30 p.m.!

On The Agenda

On the agenda: a look at the new paper money released by the Bank of Canada, together with a video produced by the Bank regarding the anti-counterfeit measures in the new series of notes.

Let us devote our evening to the subject of paper money, and invite members to bring along unusual notes which they may have in their collections. Finally, a money quiz will be presented with a wonderful prize offered to the person with the highest score! Join us for what will be a most enjoyable and entertaining evening.

The April Meeting

This meeting saw us spend an evening with tokens, beginning with a slide show courtesy of the Canadian Numismatic Association's Library. This was followed by a quiz, and while no detailed scores were kept, students Ralph Bagnall, Ralph Dickieson and Clair Perry were seen edging their way to the medals podium! Also on view were a number of very interesting tokens being passed around for everyone's enjoyment.

Thanks are extended to all who contributed or took part in the evening. For those not able to make it to the meeting, a test-yourself copy of the token quiz is included with this newsletter.

APNA Spring Show The annual spring meeting of the Atlantic Provinces Numismatic Association takes place in Nova Scotia on Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25, 2002, at the Dartmouth Senior's Service Centre, 45 Ochterloney Street. See the attached pages for details.

The Halifax Regional Coin Club has a great weekend for us, beginning with an auction at 5:30 pm on Friday with some 154 items available to the highest bidder! See the list of lots included with this newsletter. The list will also be posted on the Halifax Regional Coin Club website, which can be reached at www.geocities.com/ halifaxcoinclub/index.

A reception will follow the auction and this is a great opportunity to chat with old friends, make some new ones, and catch up on all the numismatic news.

The bourse opens Saturday at 9:30 am and closes at 4:30 pm on Saturday May 25, also at the Senior's Centre. Expect about 25 tables of numismatic goodies.

A display section will be included, on a non-competitive basis. The HRCC is hoping this will encourage more participation in this aspect of the hobby.

PEINA members who wish to take part in the display component are reminded that they can borrow cases from the PEINA collection. See Mark Holton regarding this loan.

The day will end with a coffee and sweets reception hosted by the HRCC. There will not be a formal banquet. A note received from APNA president Doug suggests that the Marinova hotel is perhaps the closest to the show. The phone number for reservations is 1-888-798-5558.

The HRCC will be producing a set of show medals, $70 for a set of three, available from the HRCC, c/o The Dartmouth Senior's Service Centre, 45 Ochterloney Street, Dartmouth, N.S., B2Y 4M7.

Vimy Ridge 1917

The clipping, opposite, from the Charlottetown Guardian of Wednesday, April 10, reminds us that this historic battle of the First World War took place 85 years ago. Only a handful of veterans of the Canadian Corps who took part in this battle are still alive. Vimy is being remembered this year by the production of a special coin to mark this important event - a model of the coin appears in the Guardian's photo. The article neglects to mention which denomination it will be. Do you know?
