Notice of March Meeting

The March meeting of the PEINA will be held on Monday, March 24 at 7:30 pm in the Library of Colonel Gray Senior High School beginning at 7 pm with the business portion starting at 7:30. Please note, that our March meeting is not being held on our usual "third Monday"as the school will be shut down for March Break. We will be meeting one week after our usual time.

The meeting will begin at 7:30 with a draw for the usual "valuable prizes". This month, thanks to the observant eye of the wife of the PEINA president, who bought these coins on a recent visit to Ontario, we have a set of exceptionally rare Chinese coins! These coins will certainly light your way to more illuminating acquisitions in the future.

And speaking of bright acquisitions, we have some items sent to us by Harry Eisenhauer which we shall auction on behalf of the club. Included is a Knight-Dodge $5 banknote in uncirculated condition from the latest series. You may recall that last month, this newsletter had a story about Dr Malcolm Knight resigning from his position of Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada. This means that the signature of his successor will soon be appearing on our banknotes. Here's a chance to get a banknote from what will doubtless be a very small print run. And if that doesn't tempt you, there is also a scarce $2 asterisk note with the Beattie - Rasminsky signature combination, and a 1967 Centennial note, all in Unc condition. Finally, there is are a number of cheques form various chartered banks which you may find tempting. So, bring along your wallet or chequebook and be prepared to bid! All proceeds go toward the club which, as we get closer to the APNA weekend, can certainly find a good use for the funds we raise. Again, very special thanks to Harry Eisenhauer for his support.

Storm Reminder

Our March meeting will be postponed to the following Monday, the 31, should the school be closed on March 24 due to bad weather.

On The Agenda

I hope we shall be hearing more about plans for our May APNA medal, also briefly reviewing some of the matters and duties which will be arising if we are to bring off a successful show in May.

We need someone to step forward and take on the responsibility of looking after our fundraising draws. Also, what about our PEINA table?

To round out our evening, we will have (all going well) a slide show from the CNA Library, on the history of the dollar bill in Canada from the Province of Canada issue up to the recent past.

At The Last Meeting

Our thanks to Doug Shand for the loan of the video on the Maravilla, a treasure ship sunk off the coast of Florida several centuries ago. This was a most entertaining story of adventure combined with determination and remarkable luck.

The president proposed that the Friday evening May 16 reception be held, not at the usual venue (where the bourse will also be held) but outside the city at the Farmers' Bank of Rustico. And to ensure that no visitor gets lost trying to find the Bank, we'll rent a London double-decker bus from Abegweit Tours to carry us there and back in fine style! The bus seats 56 people, and that should be sufficient for the evening. The Friends of the Farmers' Bank will help us with this project, and we'll be able to show off this wonderful National Historic Site to APNA members. This includes the special collection of coins and tokens given to the Bank by the PEINA last year. We'll be short on speeches and long on food and Island hospitality and make this an evening to remember.

2003 Dues

Members have been sending in their dues and this is greatly appreciated.

To save our country-dwelling Treasurer a drive into town, the President deposits the cash and cheques received to our bank account and sends a report (and the bank's official deposit receipt) to the Treasurer by mail.

The Treasurer then sends the President a membership card to be included with the next newsletter. If you have recently paid your dues, look for your card with either this newsletter or the next one.

The dues are unchanged from last year, $15 for a single membership, $20 for a family and $10 for a student.

Our thanks go to two members, Richard Montigny and Brian MacKenzie, who have made donations to the club over and above their annual dues.

Spring Show Reminder

The APNA Spring Show is set for Friday May 16 and Saturday May 17 at Rodd's Royalty Inn.

We have reserved a block of rooms and they will be set aside for the weekend. Anyone contemplating staying at Rodd's should call now to book a room. The toll-free number is 1-800-565-7633. Ask for the special coin club rate of $75 plus taxes, and let them know if you want a room overlooking the Courtyard where the bourse and displays will be presented. There is free parking at Rodd's and easy access to the bourse area.

APNA Displays!

Don't forget that we will be having a portion of the bourse area - the large Courtyard at Rodd's Royalty Inn - set aside for displays. PEINA members are invited to prepare a display.

The club has ten glass-topped display cases, complete with lock and key, and we hope many people will take part in this aspect of the weekend's activities.

This is a great opportunity to show off your collecting efforts and educate other numismatists through the preparation of a comprehensive display.

Belzberg Collection

This collection continues to attract ink in the media. An article on the silver one dollar coin of 1911 is included elsewhere in this newsletter. Anyone wishing more information and prices realized can visit the website at www.heritagecoin.com/ features/collections/

I understand that a CD-ROM is available with the collection's highlights.

Conder Token Collector's Club

The CTCC exists for the benefit of those hardy numismatists whose interests include Conder tokens, which are private copper tokens struck for use in the U.K. from 1787 to 1797, when the "cartwheel" coinage appeared. It was the editor's intention to have a short piece regarding this club, but due to time and space limitations we'll aim to have that article next month.
