June 1999 Newsletter

This month we are having a coin, token, and medal auction before our regular monthly meeting. There will be previewing of the auction material at 6:30 p.m. Auction will commence at 7:00 p.m. and it should be over in an hour. Depending on Brian, the auctioneer, we should be able to start our meeting around 8 o’clock. This is a collection that was given in trust to Lyall Somers to dispose off. Lyall wanted to give all club members a chance at it so he decided to have the lot auctioned. He approached me and I thought it was a good idea as well. I have made up a catalogue of the contents, which is included in this newsletter. I hope you will all be able to make the auction, and bring lots of money, there will be a 5% buyer’s fee for the club, and no bids under a dollar accepted.

The committee working on the history of the club held a couple of meetings going through all the old newsletters and made phone calls to some of the early members, digging up all the information available. We have come up with a condensed history of our club, as composed by Brian. A copy is enclosed for your perusal and we would welcome any comments you might have.

You will recall the vote at our last meeting was very much in favor of the Confederation Center, so Brian, Ralph and myself met with representatives of the Confederation Center and the Best Western Motel and the following reservations have been put in place for October 15th and 16th. Friday evening the reception will be at Club 1864, Saturday morning the wooden money group will have their breakfast meeting at the hotel. The Brouse will be in Memorial Hall, the APNA noon luncheon meeting will be at Club 1864 and the banquet will be held at the Hotel on Saturday evening. We have also booked off a group of rooms at the hotel, this information has been forwarded to the editor of the APNA newsletter which will be coming out on June 15th.

We are sorry to learn that we are losing Brian. He is leaving the province in July for Kitchener, Waterloo as Hilary has been accepted at the University of Waterloo. They will be taking up residence there. We will certainly miss Brian around the club. When there was something to be done we could always count on Brian. We wish them every success and all the best in their future endeavors. Since Brian is leaving in July he has resigned as show chairman. I don’t need to stress the importance of this position and Brian’s boots are going to be hard to fill. However, we need a new show chairman. I hope you will give this some thought and select someone for this position at this meeting. The success of our fall show depends on the chairman and his committee. There is a lot of work yet to be done and we will need a lot of volunteers, especially in advertising and promotion. I feel we have to do more advertising and promotion holding the show at the Confederation Center as we will not have the walk through of people there.

The latest news on the millennium quarters is that the banks will not be distributing any more quarters after the June issue. I have been told that all the major banks have sent a memo to all their branches, advising them that the banks will no longer be distributing the quarters. It seems that the banks have an over supply of loonies and they want the mint to take them back in exchange for paper money, apparently the mint refused. The banks in reprisal are not going to distribute any more of the quarters. This makes it great for Gatewest Coins. They only have to go down the street to pick then up, also the dealers in Ottawa where they too can pick them up at the mint. If I want to bring some in, the shipping will cost $85 for a box of 50 rolls, bringing the cost to $11.70 for a $10.00 roll.

Members have C.N.A. journals at home are asked to bring them to this meeting especially 1998 issues as they are all out among the membership, if they could be turned back into the secretary, they will be retired and put into one volume for 1998. For members future use.

Evelyn and I will be attending the Canadian Numismatic Association Show in Kitchener-Waterloo in July. We were barely able to get reservations. Air Canada had no seats available at all coming back to the Island on Sunday the 25th. The direct flight out of Charlottetown is sold out both going and coming.

Hope to see you all on Monday evening at 6:30. NOTE THE TIME FOR THE AUCTION.
