September 1999 Newsletter

I can't believe it is time for the newsletter for September already, where does the time go? It seems like such a short time since we held our June meeting. I hope you all enjoyed the wonderful summer we had, if the records in my day book are correct we had 48 days straight witho ut rain, there was a couple of times we had some rain during the night which was fine with me.

Evelyn and I had a bit of a break in July when we went to the CNA in Kitchener. It was a great show indeed and we enjoyed it very much. It was the first time for both of us in Kitchene r - Waterloo We went on the train tour to St Jacobs which was most enjoyable. The Mennonite district was most interesting. We attended all the meetings and other functions including the auction, which I came away from empty handed. Prices for quality material were very strong indeed. The Kitchener - Waterloo club are to be commended on a fine show.

Speaking of show, our executive and committees have been very busy over this past month in preparation for the APNA Fall Coin Rally Oct 15 -16. Thanks to our chairperson, coordinator, or whatever we like to call her, Terry has everything well in hand. This will be our last scheduled meeting prior to the show, so we would urge everyone to please be in attendance at this meeting so we can outline the duties of the various committees, and delegate some duties we ma y have overlooked, remember this is a team effort so we need the cooperation of everyone to make this show a success. If it should be a flop it is a reflection on the club as a whole not just those on the committees.

I want to congratulate Terry on a fine job of our web site on the net. The comments I have received have been most positive, they like the graphics, the layout and how easy it is to navigate. The number of hits ( 240 ) it has received since the first of the month, way beyond what we expected.

Our show medal was sort of dead for awhile when we found out the cost of a die to produce the medal by pressed metals. We felt it was beyond the clubs financial ability to strike such a small number, the cost would be prohibitive. The price per medal would be so high that very few would be sold. So Ralph and I decided to explore the possibilities of pewter and samples of Island Pewter were shown at the special meeting in August. Form these samples we were given a couple of choices. Since then I have spent many hours preparing a camera ready drawing for them to make a mold from which I hope you all approve of. The price of the medal to members and delegates wil l be approximately $18.00 with very little profit, we hope to have samples at this meeting, I am keeping my fingers crossed. We hope to use this medal as an advertising tool by sending out press releases to various Island papers stating it will be launched at the show with the slogan "From iceboats to Bridge in 200 Hundred years". We can also call it our millennium medallion.

I have picked up the watch which we are selling tickets on. It is lovely and Frank needs to be commended on such a fine piece. I will have it for display at the meeting and lots of tickets with the licence number on them "thanks to Mark". The more we sell the more we can promote the show and the more goodies we can buy for hospitality night.

Next months meeting ( October 18)will be our annual meeting. Our nomination chairman "Marshal" will be bringing forth in his report, names to fill the position of President, Secretary, Newsletter editor, and Treasurer. Anyone who would like to let their name stand for any of those positions, please let Marshall know. This meeting follows right after the APNA show there should be lots of interest.

Hope to see you all this Monday evening. At which time we will be open for suggestions on what committees should be formed for next year, Program, membership, etc. Bring along any new items you may have picked up during the summer. I have a prize that I found and I will take it along to show everyone.

BRING ALONG A FRIEND, EVERYONE IS WELCOME

Ralph Dickieson President

Note; I just had a call from former members of our club Keith and Alma Swanson. They will be attending this meeting , and they look forward to meeting old friends and all our new members as well.
