What Jazz Does To Me
by Margaret Ellis Hill

I need to be
tasted in the reds and blues
of a dobro’s sexy sound,
a sax’s waved wail, pushed
with hot lips ease into longing.
A drummer’s steady pulse
excites my body to rock.
Jazzy flit in fiddles waver
between melancholy and fingered fantasy,
brass slides down the curves of me
to tempt with smiled capture,
glitter of tambourines allure
sparkles like champagne highs.

I run a hand down silky textured rhythms,
thoughts kept in close time,
stroked and fed with jazz songs
for this hungry cat.

A Slamming Door
by Margaret Ellis Hill

It all started with a slamming door,
a slap to the heart of a young bride.

I should have left but I didn’t,
should have questioned but I couldn’t.

You never told me how special I was;
that it was wonderful I would
carry your son.
I figured you were angry at my ignorance,
the inconvenience of my fault.

so I climbed into duty, tip toed
around your overstuffed chair
for safety’s sake.
