Judge advocates work in criminal law, prosecuting or defending soldiers at courts-martial, or prosecuting civilian offenders in U.S. Magistrate Court of U. S. District Court. Criminal cases range from misdemeanor offenses to capital cases. In the civil law area, judge advocates handle administrative law issues, which include military and civilian personnel law, environmental law, labor law, personal injury, and contract law. Judge advocates provide counsel and limited representation to soldiers, retirees, and their families in areas such as estate planning, family law, landlord-tenant law, federal and state tax matters, and consumer protection. Judge advocates also provide legal advice to military leaders in the international arena, interpreting treaties, international conventions and rules of engagement. The flag consists of the JAG Corps regimental crest centered on a white background. The crest is comprised of a sword and pen crossed and wreathed, embroidered in gold, emblazoned on a shield. The pen represents the recording of testimony and the sword symbolizes the military character of the Corps. The wreath is symbolic of honor. Attached below the shield is a dark blue scroll doubled and inscribed with the numerals "1775" in silver, representing the anniversary of the Corps. Dark blue and silver are the colors associated with the Corps; gold is for excellence.
