Francis Marion

"Swamp Fox" of the American Revolution

A remarkable grave rests deep in the woods
Not easy for one to find
Attempting to give the honor it should
To Francis Marion's cunning mind

"Swamp Fox" was what he was often called
He was named thus by Tarleton, his foe
America remembers and he's revered by all
When this patriot they get to know

He loved his country far more than his life
So he bravely fought and led
Fighting Red Coats with both gun and knife
While Cornwallis counted his wounded and dead

When the Revolution came to its triumphant close
He continued to valiantly serve
The Brigadier General now found repose
As a South Carolina senator of steely nerve

Take the time to visit his grave
Visit Belle Isle in the late afternoon
A sunbeam reflects on this one so brave
Who rests where the hickory nuts are strewn
