Kalopsia Exquisite Beauty Of The Defiled Answered by Matt Medeiros Well, where did you get the band name from ? what is it ? Kalopsia is an outdated English word, which basically means, the belief that things are more beautiful than they really are, like a hallucination of sorts. It was just one of the many terms we discovered looking through books and on the web and I thought it was perfect for us. ' Exquisite Beauty Of The Defiled ' is a piece of torture pleasure, the sound is good too, do you satisfied with the result from sound to people reaction so far ? Well, I am a perfectionist, so there are things that I would liked to have come out a little differently, but I think most of that was related to the budget and the fact that we only had 4 days to record and mix. I wish I had harmonized the leads like I had originally planned, and other little, nitpicky things here and there, but for the most part, I am really very satisfied. J-F did a fantastic job giving us a heavy, sharp sound that really brings the songwriting out. I think the mix is just about perfect, and nothing else I've ever done on, with (my old band) Eschaton or otherwise has ever been mixed this well. The reaction so far has been great. We've given out a couple hundred 3-song samplers, and sent many full lengths to press and radio. No one has had a single bad thing to say. I just want more people to hear it, more zines to review it, and more radio shows to spin it! Okay, describe your music for those who still doesn't know about Kalopsia? Metal! Ok, well more descriptively, Kalopsia is a dynamic take on brutal death metal, with roots in thrash. We have slams, grooves, blasts, grinds, multiple vocal styles, sick leads and hateful gore lyrics. We are similar to Jungle Rot, Lividity, Fleshgrind, Dying Fetus, Impaled, Obituary, Malevolent Creation, Benediction, Slayer and Deicide, but we are different from each of those bands. Guess you'll have to go to the Kalopsia website (www.kalopsia.org), download the mp3s available there and see for yourself, haha. I think you wrong to write 'Orgasmic Mutilation' is dirty tracks on your release info, that song is recommended too bro, comment ? The same release info went to everyone, press and radio. The 'dirty' thing is really only for radio, and I mention that because I don't want people to play songs with curses and get in trouble, because that would suck. I do, however, think that it's one of the best songs on the album, and I'm particularly proud of it. Zines should check that out as a point of reference for a review. It has everything I wanted to do on this album all in one song, multi-vocals, thrashes, grinds, a brutal breakdown, a beautiful melodic bridge a catchy chorus and full on gore. That song is what this album is all about. The intro on ' Driven By Voices' is killer, what movie is it? can you explain when the movie intro is become useful and totally crap ? That's from a movie called 'The Ugly' which came out in 1997, staring Paolo Rotondo. The main character, Simon, is in a mental institution for a series of grisly murders. The psychologists interviewing him find that he heard voices telling him to kill. It's a really awesome, fucked up movie. I saw it on dvd in 2002 and it instantly became a favorite. Basically, my girlfriend loved the movie, and got it on dvd, we went to one of her friends' houses to watch it, and when I saw that scene, I jumped up and started screaming, "I have to sample that, oh my god, it's perfect!" They didn't know what the hell was wrong with me, because they had never heard "Driven by Voices" which I had written back in 1999 or 2000, but was getting ready to finally record. I think it breaks up the album quite nicely. We only used two samples, that one, and one from 'Se7en,' and they are both short and sweet. Some bands overdo it. Lividity's second album, "The Age of Clitoral Decay" was like 33 minutes total, with 11 minutes of samples or something crazy like that. I was glad when they cut back on it on "Til Only the Sick Remain." Mortician overdoes it, but it's cool because that's part of their style, if they did an album with no samples, (besides "Final Bloodbath," of course) people would be pissed. Aborted uses really good samples, and there's samples from "The Usual Suspects" on the first Waco Jesus cd and Suffocation's "Despise the Son" which are awesome. So I guess it depends on the band, and whether they use samples to enhance an album and its atmosphere or just use it to make the album longer. Yeah, brutal death music goes to movie, even I heard one band that have a sample taken from idiot movie Dumb and Dumberer ... do you like comedy ? I LOVE comedy. I love horror, and that's why I love Dead Alive! I love comedy movies and have written comedy and satire for many years. Most recently I've done stuff for www.nottheonion.com. Some of my favorite movies include The Cable Guy, Twins, Old School, Back to the Future, and a bunch more that I can't think of right now. I actually saw Dude Where's my Car? on tv. I thought it was going to totally suck, so I watched it, to see how bad it was, but I laughed my ass off! I think that was the low expectations though. My favorite comedy shows are definitely Family Guy and the Simpsons. South Park is great too. I just watched the Family Guy last night. "The only British slang I know is that 'fag' means 'cigarette.' 'Well, someone tell this cigarette to shut up!' They're supposed to be making a direct-to-dvd Family Guy movie. I gotta get it the day it comes out! ' Realm Of The Dead ' is more into Impaled stuff and ' Her Obituary Reads' into Obituary stuff...remind me to ' Slowly We Rot ' era, do you have any special purpose about this ? Well I didn't want the whole album to sound the same. Originally there were 3 people singing in the band, and I wrote "Realm..." for someone else to sing. When I sang it in my normal low voice, it didn't sound right, so they sang it, and they sang it high. It was kinda a nod to Carcass and Impaled and that style, and it just suited the song better. That person was later kicked out, so when I went in to record it, I sang it high and I think it came out great. You're good to notice the Obituary influence on the last song, which is one of the reasons we put the word "Obituary" in the title. That is the only song that is on the album that came out of us just fucking around at practice. I wrote that riff and the song, for the most part, was born. We changed some stuff around, but it wasn't the process that the other songs were. In the studio I was messing around with the idea of doing a John Tardy style vocal, but decided against it, haha. I would like to say that ' Cause Of Death ' is their best album ever, ' World Demise' too...and they were vacum now, I need a new Obituary cd with ' Cause Of Death ' line up...comment ? See, I'm always skeptical about reunions. Suffocation was a good one though. I've seen them twice so far, once at New England Metal and Hardcore Festival, and at the Maryland Deathfest. I am going to see them this weekend at the New Jersey Metal and Hardcore Fest. Those guys definitely didn't lose their edge during the downtme, that's for sure! Someone told me that a promoter put up a $10,000 bid to have Obituary play one of the upcoming metalfests in the US. Personally, I'd like to see them, because I never did. My girlfriend is a huge Obituary fan, and she only saw them once, and John Tardy wasn't singing. What a rip off! I really think they're done for good though. John Tardy doesn't want to tour. That's why they broke up. Don Tardy is in Andrew WK. I don't know if Trevor could pull off another record, just because Catastrophic's record was so bad. It would be good for James Murphy though, because he could use the money to cover his medical bills. I don't know. Obituary fuckin' ruled, and I would probably buy a new record without hearing it first. Let's get Deicide, Obituary, Malevolent Creation and Suffocation on tour in the US, then I can die a very happy man. Any of label interest as of yet ? what'd be the ideal label for your band? Not yet, but we haven't sent stuff out to them. We wanted to get some press first. I would either want to be a big fish in a little pond, you know, like the most important band on a small label, like United Guttural or Unique Leader, where people are going to work their ass off for your record, to get it out there and get the press to happen, kinda like what I have now, doing it myself through Think Metal Productions. The problem there is that things can fall apart in a second, and it's not always run like a business, like what happened with Ablated records and CBT. The other option would be to be part of a big label, something like Century Media or Relapse, Metal Blade or whatever, because they have the staffing that, if you have a record out there, it's going to get support and people are going to hear it. The downside there is that they are working so many things, you're not always the priority. So I mean, there's good and bad on both sides. I just want metalheads everywhere to be able to hear the record, and to stop hemorrhaging money trying to get this out there. New Jersey...a state where Mortal Decay formed, do you like their killer cd called ' Sickening Erotic Fanaticism ' ? a new one is little bit confusing.... Mortal Decay are actually pretty far from us, geographically. But back to the point, "Sickening Erotic Fanatacism" is a great album. "Revived Half Dead" is definitely a classic. I like Kelly's vocals better, because they're clearer and more aggressive, but their new singer, who's actually their original singer, is brutal. I finally saw them, at Maryland Deathfest. A guy from Jersey had to go to another state to see a band from Jersey, what the fuck? haha. Beside metal stuff...what else do you heard ? I have about 6 or 700 cds. 98% of that is metal. The rest is hardcore, punk, electronic, rap and some comedy stuff. Non metal bands (or musicians) that I like include Portishead, this cool trip hop group with amazing female vocals, Bjork (noticing a pattern?), the Advantage, who play songs from video games, totally amazing. Weezer's first 2 albums were great, then they got cool and started to suck. Coldplay is great. CAke's first album is great. Mostly just chill out music. Some of the other stuff is Necro, who's this vicious as fuck rapper. "Necro's the way to go, every dirtbag, slut and player know, cuz I keep it BRUTAL like the pit up inside a Slayer show." He is fucking intense, like gangsta rap on pcp and crack. And of course, Ice-T, but he's metal anyway. New Body Count album coming out next year, I can't wait! When I'm hanging out, a lot of times I'll listen to drum and bass, cuz a lot of my friends are into that. That shit is crazy. Anthony from Dataclast just gave me a great cd with some video game remixes on it, fucking awesome. But most of the time, it's metal. Death metal, black metal, thrash, grind, whatever, as long as it's good. I'm lucky, because a lot of guys have girlfriends who are like, "turn that shit off." My girlfriend picked up Human Remains, "Where were you when" and Terrorizer's "World Downfall" used this past weekend, so as you can see, that's not the case with me. I'm a very lucky man, haha. One of my friends said, "You think, 'his girlfriend's hot, why is she going out with him?!' Then you realize she likes CBT and it all makes sense." How about daily life out there ? society, chicks, metal scene, etc... You know, wake up, piss, eat, go to work, whatever. I got the only chick I need in my life right now, so I'm not really looking. The metal scene is ok here, it comes and it goes. It's all up to the bands and the shows. A few years ago, Necroharmonic Productions was doing shows in NJ, and that made the scene stronger, for sure, but then that kinda died out. We still have a metalfest every year, I saw Grave this year and they were awesome. We actually have the New Jersey Metal and Hardcore Festival coming up in two weeks, and that's gonna fuckin' destroy! Beside bands, what is your occupation ? I make a lot of money as an assassin, but we can't talk about that. I pretend to know stuff about computers, so that's my 'real' job. I knew lot of death/grind people hate and anti of all these new metal like Slipknot, Coal Chamber, Korn, bla...bla..bla but don't you think that all of these is the proccess, I mean those kids listen to new metal first then they will searching to stuff that more heavier, just like back in 10 to 15 years ago when we listened to thrash metal....what do u think about this ? I think you're totally right. Back in the mid-late nineties, people were all up in arms about Marilyn Manson. Personally, I consider them to be a gateway to better metal. The bands I got into when I first stated liking metal were Megadeth (Countdown era), Metallica (black album era) and Nirvana (Nevermind era). To me, "Lithium" was a metal song. If it wasn't for the black album, I wouldn't have gotten into older Metallica, I wouldn't have gotten into Slayer, and I never would have gotten into Deicide and all that shit. Nobody's born with a Slayer shirt on, you gotta get into it somehow. Personally, I'm not a fan of Slipknot, but I'd rather kids listen to Slipknot then Sugar Ray or something like that. Hell, Slipknot's heavier than In Flames and Soilwork nowadays anyway! It's all about looking for the good shit. Even some of the death metal I liked when I first got into it was crap. I didn't know any better, now I do. So if you see a kid with a Korn t-shirt on, don't bash 'em, go up to 'em and say, "You think that shit's heavy? Check THIS out!" and play something better. You might just turn them into a real metalhead. Anything you'd like to add before we close this up ? Thanks for the interview Ferly.
