Interview with Chris Basile

After a few years, one of most influential band PYREXIA is back, so what were you doing during the vacum time ?

Well...first off..id like to say thanks for the interview and say its great to be back !! The past 2 years have been a terrible set back for PYREXIA and a complete waiste of time . A few years back...the old singer Keith ., had filled in for John Tardy on a couple of Obituary tours...I think he thought he would eventually join Obituary....but after they reunited with un - replaceable Tardy......he befriended Trevor.. the guitarist for Obituary and the two decided they would like to work together in the future . Keith then asked the other members of REX to be a part of the MetalBlade project Catastrophic . The name precedes itself....and by working on this project ...and trusting the wrong people....PYREXIA no longer was the forefront of our musical goal .....for 2 yrs...PYREXIA was basically put on the shelf while all our energies went into a sub- par effort where all the creativity and originality that made PYREXIA was not considered in the daily operations or plannings of the band . What happened the past 2 yrs was Catastrophic ..literally.

What is the reason you reforming the bands ? tell me the current line up ...

PYREXIA has always been my life ...its what we love....we ve always been driven by writing music and playing with other musicians .....I believe in the music....the material ...thats why it was a hard thing for me to do Catastrophic..I didnt believe in the music or the direction of the band....PYREXIA is back because I still believe as I always did that we can deliver a style and a product that people like and enjoy...and I really believe our best material is yet to be written so PYREXIA still has a strong purpose to me...it had to continue . As far as the new line - up...its the best of the best out there .....the guys Im workin with now are full of talent and hunger ...they believe in REX and are among the few who can perform it with precision . 3. Why Guy Marchais didn't join the army ? I heard that he played in SUFFOCATION, do you think he decided choose SUFFO as his priority than the old band ?

Guy has been my best friend for the past 14 yrs...and he prob always will be.....he was given an offer to join Suffocation before REX was really re- formed an goin strong...he made a career choice and must give 100% to Suffoaction wich is what I would expect if he were in REX...so he is no longer with us in PYREXIA as a member but always as a great friend and partner in Brutality .

What can we expect on new songs of PYREXIA ? how many songs do you have right now ?

My God ......like i said earlier.....I believe our best music has yet to be recorded....the feel and strength of our new songs surpass any prevoius record we ve done ....and again I believe we have been able to do so and still maintain originality .

I heard too that Pyrexia create KILLTV.NET ...what is it all about?

KillTV was beautiful....and will continue in the future....it was a Metal/Hardcore Live steaming video show on-line . we had a streaming tattoo show that yoll be able to download at our site www.PYREXIA.us .

New York Death Metal very popular because 3 bands,they are SUFFOCATION,INTERNAL BLEEDING and mighty PYREXIA but recently NYDM known as 'Groove's Land'....do you have a mission to beat this trademark with your own style ?

I think what makes PYREXIA unique among New York bands and other bands in general ....is that none of our albums or songs sound the same . We try to write music in three dimensions and never limit ourselves to a certain beat or growl that would box us in to a genre.

What were you doing on September 11/2001 attacks ?

I was driving in my car when it came over the radio that the first tower was hit . I cant describe the feelings I felt when both towers fell . I live in NY and work in Manhattan and had a lot of friends an family in the city that day. I'll never forget that day .

You played in CATASTROPHIC and release an album through Metal Blade, does Pyrexia will follow the path ? any other label might interested you to contact ?

All bets are off with this next one ....we'd really like to see this next release get the distibution needed to be accessable to everyone.

Do you feel the scene has change because of Internet? Tell me more about your opinion to Underground Goes To Internet....:)

The Internet is has become THE most important tool used by bands today to communicate their music to everyone worldwide . Theres no more countries or boudaries on the web...everyone is right there . I love it. www.PYREXIA.us

Tell me about the PYREXIA gear uses...

Our singer uses 2 human lungs to get his sound ....I ve got an old tree I carved into a mammal shaped 6 string ....our drummer playes on hollowed out elephant husks with zebra skin for skins ....the bass player uses a 300 yr old chinese smashing bone with real lion whiskers as strings and Lee has his own custom guitar made from bison rib.

Have heard any Indonesian bands ?

I'd love to hear some Indonesian bands !! How is the scene out there ? It would be sick to play in Indonesia !!

Will you take some songs from 'SERMON OF MOCKERY' or 'SYSTEM OF THE ANIMAL' with new productions and re-arrangement in your new album ?

Actually we'll probably be looking to re- release the older stuff re-mastered very shortly .

Does Pyrexia straddle the line between the genres ?

The doors are wide open for PYREXIA ...I think our music has an appeal for many genres ....thats the beauty of PYREXIA and what I think sets us apart. No limits .

How is the writing process like for you guys ?

By now ...our song structure and arrangements in general have gotten more polished and matured ....but it still comes from the heart....I feel every rythm and every change in every song ....and as long as theres people out there feelin it with me ...Ill never stop !!!
