One year ago my internet web pages began to introduce my art work and writing to an international audience. The response from around the world has been better than I expected. Especially, in the unexpected awards that people have given this site. I am not being modest when I say these awards are more the direct result of how the webmaster - Sandpiper - has taken material and meshed it into something accessible and easily manageable to the majority of computers and users from beginners to pros. (The beginners' idea was mine 'cuz I'm a computer dummy). There are still many kinks to work out on this site, so I expect a better viewing for this coming year. Overall this site's purpose was to lend a hand in educating people about what it has meant for my life to be an artist who just happened to be born Native American Blackfeet-Nez Perce-Umatilla. What makes me different from most other artists is that I have continued to keep one foot in the modern art world and the other foot in my Native traditional roots. There have been many struggles when it came to combining the two worlds into a cohesion I could be satisfied with. These struggles have been worth the effort and energy. There is no textbook for making the struggles easy when it comes to being any kind of artist. Young students during my travels around the world and on Native American reservations often ask me how they can become an artist like me. I say, stay in school, go to college or an art school, then travel and see the world of art wherever you find it, and make art, make art, make art! When I first traveled I wanted to see the REAL art I saw photos of in school/college textbooks, that were postage stamp sized. The Michaelangelo David in Florence, The Sistine Chapel in Rome, a Rodin in Paris, Rembrandts in the Netherlands, the Egyptian pyramids! The list is endless! You must travel and feel the sun that inspired the light in the paintings of the Mediterraneen painters. Breathe the earth from where marble stone came for the gifts artists left behind for the world. Artists are a rare breed of focused people who inspire and receive inspiration from wherever they live. I am from a nomadic people so I suppose I gather my inspiration and store it up for an explosion of colors on canvases. And if I should ever run out of ideas, I have the whole world to visit and revisit. I hope you all will return for a visit to my thoughts and reflections as often as you like. This past year from April 1st 2001 to April 1st 2002 saw the intoduction of the sunburst theme and the "bachelor blanket " based on buffaloe robes' designs, and the continuation of Pow Wow dancers. A fool in Chamonix, France, having his day in the sun with one highlight being a one-man exhibition.
Il y a une année de cela, j'ai commencé par l'intermédiaire de mes pages web à présenter mon art et mes écrits à un public international. La réponse de par le monde entier a dépassé mes espérances. Ce qui était surtout inattendu, c'est la quantité de trophées que les visiteurs m'ont octroyés. Ce n'est pas de la simple modestie de ma part de reconnaître que ces trophés sont surtout un résultat direct de la manière dont Sandpiper a utilisé le matériel fourni pour en faire un dosage facile à saisir et à accéder pour la plupart des ordinateurs et des visiteurs, qu'ils soient pros ou débutants. (L'idée d'accomoder les débutants venait de moi, car je suis un ignare en matière de computer). Il reste beaucoup de défauts à corriger, mais j'espère une nouvelle qualité pour cette deuxième année. Dans l'enseble, le but de ce site était de contribuer à éduquer les gens quant à la signification pour un artiste d'être né par hasard Natif Américain, Blackfeet-Nez Perce-Umatilla. Ce qui me différencie des autres artistes, c'est de savoir à tout moment conserver un pied dans le monde de l'art contemporain, et l'autre dans mes traditions Natives Américaines. Il s'agit souvent d'u combat intérieur pour parvenir à ajuster ces deux éléments en une cohésion qui me paraît acceptable. Mais cela vaut l'effort et l^énergie que j'y consacre. Il n'y a pas de méthode pour alléger le combat lorsqu'on veut être un artiste digne de ce nom. De jeunes étudiants à travers le monde et sur les réserves Indiennes me demandent souvent comment devenir un artiste comme moi. Je leur conseille de rester à l'école, entrer au collège ou une école d'art, puis voyager et voir le monde artistique partout où vous le trouverez, et surtout, créez, créez, créez!!! Lors de mon premier voyage, je voulais voir le véritable art tel que je l'avais vu sur les illustrations de la taille d'un timbre poste dans les livres de l'école d'art: le David de Michelange à Florence, la Chapelle Sistine à Rome, un Rodin en Angleterre, des Rembrandts en Hollande, les pyramides en Egypte! La liste est infinie! Il faut voyager et sentir le soleil qui a inspiré la lumière dans les tableaux des peintres méditerranéens. Respirer la terre d'où vient le marbre des oeuvres que les artistes ont laissées en cadeau au monde. Les artistes sont une espèce très rare de gens très focalisés qui inspirent et puisent leur inspiration partout où ils vivent. Je viens d'un peuple de nomades, donc je suppose que je collectionne mon inspiration et je la sauvegarde jusqu'à ce qu'elle explose en couleurs sur mes canvas. Et si jamais je devais être à court d'idées, j'ai le monde entier à visiter et revisiter.
