Exhibition in Chamonix, France, January 30 to March 16, 2002

January 15, 2002

Theme: Native American as in an original red man from North America

Art works: paintings, ready made sculptures, collages, mixed media and art performance which describes through SkyHawk's mind's eye what it means to be ndn (Indian) in the modern world, looking back to the future.

Comment/Artist statement: Often I see myself becoming more and more of a neo-expressionist artist--Artist in the sense I am limited only by my imagination and creativity in the boldest ambition. The medium is something limiting to project my ideas and / or both dreams / visions.

"Isms" in art come and go, like categories in today's music awards. But, how a song or tune makes you feel and then refeel/reflect on memories from that song or tune remains intact without a hip-hop, blues, popism or classicalism advertising around in our mind's ears.

My "style" of painting is a product of my rez upbringing , "relocation via the US government " into the Los Angeles black southeast central ghettos/barrios , escaping to other American  time zones to find my art education hidden within the minds of dedicated teachers . If there is credit to be given it should go to my former art teachers and academic teachers non-secular and secular (The latter is where I made an existential jump off a 1000 ' (300m) cliff to commit suicide into a shallow river only to survive. My name Amazing became shortened to Z'man). The evolution of my art making , art performing, acting and stand-up comedian to a wannabe blues man represents all the stages/passages of REINVENTING myself. This can be best simplified as finding a way to stay out of the unemployment line.

The other credit  is the  un- styling of my art and  goes to breaking all the rules my teachers taught me...But that is a story for another day...

In brief, I am just another ndn beggar with a paint brush. I dream of being a maestro one day.

My choice of artwork that speaks to our looking back at the future: Salvador Dali's "Paranoid".
