The legend of the Haisla Totem Pole

"Long ago, G'psgolox the chief of the Eagle clan of the Kitlope suffered a great loss of losing all his children. This enormous loss filled him with great sorrow. One day when he was particularly upset with grief, he set off into the forest where he encountered the Spirit "Tsooda" who asked the chief why he was so sad. G'psgolox told of his misfortune   and how he buried his family on a tree top. Tsooda showed great compassion for the chief and gave him a piece of transparent rock, a rock crystal and instructed G'psgolox to go back to the burial tree of his family  and bite a piece out of the rock and call on his family to come down from the tree. G'psgolox went to the burial tree where he had put his dead family and bit a piece out of the rock and called out to his family to get up and come down from the tree. He noticed the good Spirit Tsooda among them and realized that it was the Tsooda Spirit who had brought his family back to life. From that day on, G'psgolox was a great medicine man who healed people. Before healing someone he first took a bite out of the rock that the Tsooda Spirit had given him".

"Il y a longtemps, G'psgolox, chef du clan de l'Aigle des Kitlope, a subi un grande malheur en perdant tous ses enfants. Cette perte l'a rempli de chagrin. Un jour qu'il se sentait particulièrement triste, il partit dans la forêt où il rencontra l'Esprit "Tsooda" qui lui demanda pourquoi il était si triste. G'psgolox lui expliqua les raisons de son chagrin, et lui dit qu'il avait choisi comme sépulture pour sa famille le sommet d'un arbre. Tsooda compatit avec le chef et lui donna un morceau d'un cristal transparent. Il lui conseilla d'aller au pied de l'arbre où il avait enterré sa famille, de mordre un morceau de la roche et d'appeler sa famille pour qu'elle se lève et descende de l'arbre. G'psgolox alla vers l'arbre où sa famille reposait , mordit un morceau de la roche et appela sa famille pour la faire descendre de l'arbre. Il remarqua que le bon esprit Tsooda était parmi eux et comprit alors que c'était Tsooda qui avait fait revivre sa famille. Depuis ce jour, G'psgolox devint un homme médecine très respecté qui avait le pouvoir de guérir les gens. Avant de soigner quelqu'un, il mordait toujours un morceau du cristal que l'Esprit Tsooda lui avait donné."
