Piercing Help
A Piercees Bill Of Rights
- Every person being pierced has the right...
- To be pierced in a scrupulously hygienic, open environment, by a clean, consciencious piercer wearing a fresh pair of disposable latex gloves.
- To a sober, friendly, calm, and knowledgeable piercer, who will guide them through their piercing experience with confidence and assurance.
- To the peace of mind which comes from knowing that their piercer knows and practices the very highest standards of sterilization and hygiene.
- To be pierced with a brand-new, completely sterilized needle, which is immediately disposed of in a medical sharps container after use on the piercee alone. to be touched only with freshly sterilized, appropriate impliments, properly used and disposed of or resterilied in an autoclave prior to use on anyone else.
- To know that ear-piercing guns are never appropriate, and are often dangerous, when used on anything other than ear lobes.
- To be fitted only with jewelry which is appropriately sized, safe in material, design, and construction, and which best promotes healing. Gold-plated, gold-filled, and sterling silver jewelry are never appropriate for any new or unhealed piercing.
- To be fully informed about proper aftercare, and to have continuing access to their piercer for consultation and assistance with all their piercing related questions.
Alternative Remedies
A number of alternative treatments to assist with the healing of piercings have been tried and suggested by some of our clients and by other piercers. In trying these alternatives remember that no two people are alike and that often what works for one person will not work for another.
- These alternatives have been suggested should the basic piercing care that your piercer has discussed with you doesn't work!
- Tea tree oil is an essential oil from Australia with a scent which is strongly reminiscent of eucalyptus oil but which is supposed to be a germicidal, non-irritant and excellent at dissolving pus. It is pleasant and soothing, easing of irritation although it doesn't solve all problems instantly. Some people may find they can just dab it on the piercing and let nature take its course. But some will find it too strong. If that's the case with you, first mix it with 70 parts distilled water.
- Evening Primrose oil has proven successful in aiding women with healing problems that may be connected with the menstrual cycle. It has been suggested that a course of Evening Primrose oil helps to reduce premenstrual tension and helps to prevent sore nipples which may occur with the menstrual cycle. Taken orally (usually gelcaps).
- Many have found that a solution of one level teaspoon of salt added to two quarts of distilled water is a very gentle, but effective way to bathe their piercings. Some people who prefer the salt water solution, have used the saline solution which is used for bathing contact lenses.
- Using a warm chamomile tea bag as a compress can often relieve the tenderness and redness of a new piercing, during the initial healing period. Others have used tincture of calendula to aid in the healing of their piercing with great success.
