Mexican Sun God Faces

The Sun is an important theme in Mexican arts and crafts.  The Aztecs, who lived in Mexico form about 1300-1500 B.C. carved a huge Sun Stone that worked as a type of calendar.

Clay Suns are still made in Mexico in a place called Metepec by the Nahau Indians, who are descendants of the Aztec.

Supplies/Materials needed:

Paper Plates (any size)

Scrap Paper to draw face design (Show “Pencil Rub Transfer”)*

Copies of Design pages

Markers-Permanent black

Paintbrushes

Paint-Mostly yellow, golds and browns

Scissors, Paperpunch

Poster of different faces---painted to show variations or meanings

1.       Draw design on scrap paper (or use pattern)

2.     Transfer design to paper plate, bottom side up*

3.     Paint darker gold-burnt sienna mixture over all the plate

4.     Paint highlights with lighter yellows and golds---Around eyes, nose and edges of plate (as the rays)

5.     Cut pointed edges (rays) after drying---punch hole to hang

*Option...

Cut out features of face and rays and glue on plate instead of painting them.
