I:

Today is my first day. I get to be teacher! I sat in my car squealing. I’ve waited so long for this. Mama, I will make you proud!

I took a breath and stepped out of the car. I hummed to myself as I walked into Taki High. This is going to be a great day.

II:

I made it to my first class of the day. The class rep stood up.

“Stand,” she said. The class stood up.

“Bow,” she said. They all bowed.

“Sit,” the class rep said. The class sat down.

“Thank you,” I said. I got a good look at all of the students. Let’s see… Twenty-six students. I can do this.

“Good morning, class!” I greeted them.

“Good morning,” my students mumbled. I put my hands on my hips.

“Come on!” I said. “Is that all? Wake up! Let’s try that again!” I broke into a huge smile.

“Good morning, class!” I said out loud.

“Good morning,” they mumbled again. I sighed. Oh well, this would have to do for now. I turned to the chalkboard.

“My name is Hill-sensei,” I said. I wrote my name on the board. All eyes were on me.

III:

They are staring at me. I still smiled.

“I will be your new teacher,” I added. Silence. All eyes on me. Come on! Say something!

“You’re hot!” one boy said.

“Uh… thanks,” I said. The boys stared intently at me. Oh boy… Why am I sweating?

“Are you single?” another student asked. My eyes widened.

“Why?” I asked. My heart is pounding now.

“How old are you?”

“Do you have a boyfriend?”

“What type of guys do you like?” The questions keep piling up. I wanted to turn and run.

“Oi!” someone yelled. We all turned to the back. A girl with short dark hair sat next to the window, looking bored.

“Enough,” she said. “You are being creepy. It’s annoying.” The class got quiet.

“Oh come on, Tenshin,” another boy said. “Lighten up!”

“No,” Tenshin said. “I will not.” All of the boys grumbled. I began to relax. Who was this Tenshin girl?

IV:

Tenshin Kohaku. Who was she? I couldn’t read her. She looked so bored in class. I wondered what her deal was.

“Oh her?” one of my new colleagues asked. “Good luck getting through to that one.”

“Why is that?” I asked. She shrugged with her cup in hand.

“She keeps to herself,” my colleague said. “Barely talks. Always looks bored.”

“What is her home life like?” I asked.

“Mom is loose. Dad is out of the picture. She does have an older sister,” she said.

“What is she like?”

My colleague shrugged. “Normal, I guess. She keeps everything together.”

“That’s good.”

“But she has a boyfriend.”

It took a moment for it to sink in. “Oh…”

“Yeah.” My colleague nodded.

“Oh…” I said again. I looked down at my tea. Okay…

V:

What did I get myself into? My class is fine. The boys keep drooling over me. I can deal with that. They are just boys. But Kohaku-chan? Oh… Yeesh. I want to try to understand her but I don’t know about that…

I think I have a challenge on my hands. Mama, please help me!
