Tonight is opening night! With all the business of busy-ness, I've had little time to update the site. Our dress/tech rehearsal was far too easy. The show looks amazing now, thanks to some spiffy lighting, and sounds wonderful with the sfx and the music. I regret not taking pictures to share with the world. It was probably the smoothest tech I've ever done.
But today is the day. The day that it all finally happens. There are butterflies about, in all of our stomachs I think. I just can't wait to see how it turns out, in front of an audience. Rehearsals, lately, have been slow and rather unproductive, owing to the simple fact that this show isn't going to get any more polished. It needs an audience. We're all anxious. I have complete and utter faith that this is going to be one hell of a night. I can't wait!
... and a quiet director in the corner. I watched the show from one of the wings on Friday, and was completely blown away. The one thing this cast needed most was an audience, and what a better way to kick-of the Fringe than with a group of family, friends and loved-ones. A small group of 30 or so people were treated to the best performance of this show I've ever seen. The intensity and emotion coming out of Tara that night was electric. Luke wowed me with his comic timing - there were new nuances here and there that we've GOT to keep. All in all I think it was terrific. It's going to be hard to top a show like Friday's, but I'm sure, as the audiences grow bigger, so will the show.
Today is our second show. After the butterflies settle, I'm sure this one will be a hit too. Fingers crossed. Hope some reviewers show up...
Well, yet another smokey day here in Festival City. Yesterday's show was great! Bigger audience, and full of people I didn't know, which means word is getting around.
Looks like Todd Babiak found his way to our little play Friday, and finally, the review is up in the journal today. Read the review here.
I did a wonderful little interview with CBC Radio Canada's Eve Marie Forcier this morning. The interview will likely air tomorrow morning between 6:15 and 9 am, during Le Cafe Show on French CBC 680. It's been forever since I actually had an intelligent conversation in French. I think it went over well, at the risk of me sounding like an Anglophone (which, despite my best efforts, I still am). Apres 13 ans en immersion francaise, c'est quand meme difficile a ecrire si tu ne prend pas le temp a pratiquer. Oh well.
Tonight is our midnight show. We'll either have absolutely no one in the audience (after all, who wants to stay up until 1am on a Monday), or we'll get a bunch of drunks who were smart enough to take the entire Fringe off work to see some plays. Tomorrow, at 3:45pm I've got my interview with Leslie Primeau on 630 Ched. We'll see if my on-air English is any better than my French!
Ahhhh.... Wednesday... Today we have our penultimate show, and I'm already getting kinda teary-eyed. The Midnight show saw a very small audience, as expected, but yesterday's noon show was great. It had the energy and the turnout of our first performance. I must thank my parents for their enormous support, since they have been handing out hand-bills and chocolates almost every day. I couldn't have a more supportive family.
Luke and I were lucky enough to have a good ten minute interview of 630 Ched with Leslie Primeau yesterday. It went very well. I'm sure a thousand times better than the CBC Radio one. It was fun! Saw The One Man Star Wars yesterday, also. It was amazing! Lindsay hadn't seen the trilogy, and unfortunately missed about 90% of the jokes. Only someone who has seen it a dozen times (like myself, and the majority of the audience) would get it all. Phenomenal!
Today is our 5:30 show, and I expect a large turnout, due to the fact that almost everyone in the cast knows someone coming today. Jon B.'s entire family (roughly 900,000 people) are coming and so are my extended relatives. Can't wait!
Well tomorrow is the very last performance if Dinner in the South Pacific , and I already feel sad... Oh well, it's been one hell of a run, and a great deal of fun. I can't wait until next year already.
Yesterday's show was phenomenal, stupendous AND fantabulously wonderful! I think it was the best performance yet, and there was a huge audience. Afterwards, we all went for drinks and had a blast as a cast. Rachelle, Lindsay, Deanna and I went and saw Edmonton Sketch Conspiracy's show after that, and it was hilarious. For those who don't know, Luke is actually on loan from the ESC, and we went not only to support him, but because we had heard it was a pretty funny show. There were some really hilarious skits. The interesting thing is that they have two completely different shows (three of one, and three of the other). What a devious marketing ploy! Brilliant! Why didn't we think of that? I can see it now, Dinner 2: Lost in New York. They're stranded in the middle of Grand Central Station, or Central Park... Anyways, I guess we'll have to go and see the other ESC show. And so should everyone else!
Got a great review in Vue magazine today. Too bad that we've only one last show to reap the rewards of such a review. Ah well. It's nice to see that we've been noticed though.
In a few days, the buzz of the Fringe will be over, and we'll all go back to our jobs or school and cry for a while. Somebody once said that 'Life is nothing but memories.' I can't remember who, but it sure is an interesting thought. So tomorrow, it is my plan to record the entire day on video, with Luke's camera, so that we can all look back at this one day and remember how hot we all were when we were young. Especially Jon.
It's been over a week since the Fringe wrapped up again for another year, and we're all pretty sad and wondering what to do now. Dinner in the South Pacific was, for a lot of us, the best experience we've had in theatre. It was exciting, fun and we're all looking to do something even bigger next year. In the meantime, we will be looking into touring to small Fringes around western Alberta. This is the next natural step, and I'm sure we'll be ready to embrace whatever challenges that involves. Phew! I can't believe it's over, but I can't wait until our next project!
