Marijuana Available as Prescription Drug in Netherlands

The Netherlands has become the first country to make marijuana available as a prescription drug.

As of Monday, pharmacies can begin providing medical-grade cannabis to chronically-ill patients with a doctor's prescription. Authorities say about 7,000 people suffering from cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis and Tourette's syndrome are covered by the new law.

The new law grants special licenses to government-approved companies to grow marijuana in laboratory-style conditions for distribution by the Health Ministry. The cannabis is packaged in two strengths and will be covered by health insurance.

A government spokesman said doctors should only prescribe the drug when conventional treatments fail or other medicines cause serious side effects. He said patients should not smoke the cannabis, but rather dilute it for use as a tea or vapor.
