ELEGANCE MANUFACTURER OF THE MONTH

Each month we will be covering some interesting facts about one of the leading makers of elegant house wares. Many of these market leaders have very long histories full of interesting facts; some will require more than one newsletter to cover completely.

This Month we focus on Rosenthal.

Rosenthal & Co. was founded in 1879 at Erkersreuth near Selb Germany as a general porcelain factory. It was in 1910 that the art department for Rosenthal was founded in Selb Germany. The art department was responsible for the inspirational artistic touches enhancing the beautiful designs. Even in the early days Rosenthal was a forward thinking company and it was through this forward thinking the decision was made to add a glass works department in 1950 for grinding and engraving. The addition of the glass works department allowed for Rosenthal to provide an encompassed table presentation of dinnerware with matching or coordinating glass ware. Through the years, as Rosenthal expanded it’s products it also expanded it’s factories and incorporated other makers under the Rosenthal Corporation allowing for a more diversified range of entertainment wares.

Rosenthal was smart enough to recognize that its products must not only be functional, beautiful and modern but that some would be temporary due to short term trends. This temporary design evolution group was known as “Gruppe 21”.

This little insight into the history of Rosenthal explains how they have, over their long history, remained a leading manufacturer of elegant house wares. From China to glass to cutlery to art and furniture Rosenthal is there and has made their mark.

ROSENTHAL PATTERN OF THE MONTH: ROMANZE

Rosenthal Romanze is a pattern of nostalgic charm. As stated so eloquently by Rosenthal themselves, ‘Romanze combines classic language of form with the avant-garde style of the late fifties. The elaborate yet fine relief design enhances the translucency of the delicate porcelain. A delightful interplay of light and shade emphasizes the precious nature of Romanze.’ It would be hard to describe the beauty any better.

A GREAT SUMMER RECIPE:

Chicken salad in tomato shells
1 chicken breast, boneless, skinless
1 tablespoon butter
a few drops liquid smoke
2 tablespoons finely chopped celery
4 tablespoons thinly sliced green onion
4 tablespoons mayonnaise
zest from one lemon
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon freshly round black pepper kosher salt, to taste
10 to 12 small Roma (or Plum) tomatoes
˝ cup chiffonade of arugula
2 tablespoons almonds, chopped and toasted

Season chicken breast with salt and pepper. Drizzle a few drops of Liquid Smoke over the chicken. Saute in butter over medium heat until juices are clear; set aside to cool. Cut the chicken into a small dice and set aside.

Using a sharp knife, make large 1-inch jagged cuts around each Roma tomato lengthwise. Carefully lift the tops off the tomatoes, scoop out and discard the tomato pulp from both halves, (you can use the pulp for past or soup), leaving a 1/4 –inch-thick shell. Season each shell with kosher salt and place the shells, cut side down, on paper towels to drain. Let stand for 30 minutes, or cover and refrigerate overnight. You may have to slice a small amount off the bottom of each shell to keep them from tipping on their sides.

In a small bowl, combine cooked chicken, celery, a green onion. Stir in mayonnaise, lemon zest, lemon juice, freshly cracked black pepper and kosher salt to taste.

Just before serving, stir in arugula and almonds into the chicken mixture. Spoon some salad into each tomato shell and arrange on a platter. Garnish each tomato shell with additional lemon zest, toasted almonds and a chiffonade of arugula and server.

Makes 20 to 24.
