SALISBURY
THE SUNSHINE CITY
Born on 13th September 1890 when the BSAC Pioneeer column raised the flag in Cecil Square, Salisbury grew into a large and, by African standards, sophisticated city by the early 1970's when these photos were taken.
Rhodesia's capital city covered an area of over 550 square kilometres and was the home for over half a million people of all races.
Apart from the 3 years that I spent in Bulawayo (and the months in the bush!) it was my home from 1969 until 1985.
The flower sellers in Cecil Square where, in the days when I was a flat dweller in the Avenues, used to buy a weekly bunch or two to brighten up my surroundings.
