SHAMBHALA POTTERY

C10 R. SODA/SALT TEST TILES

These are just some of the tests that I made prior to delving into soda/salt firing. Some of these slips and glazes were tested on several bodies but for the most part, I  will probably only post one version of a particular glaze or slip.  If you want a closer look you can just copy and past the photo into Paint Shop pro or a similar program and magnify it to get a better look at the tiles. (I believe you can still download a free  trial copy of it from the web).

GROUP 1

Top row left to right, first tile on left is #4053 on Windsor porcelain. It's a flashing slip to apply to bisque. Apply these flashing slips on the quite thin side.

40 EPK

40 Calcined Kaolin

20 Nepheline Syenite

Top row 2nd tile from left is # 5892 A, I think, a  flashing slip from Gordon Hutchens also on Windsor porcelain.

80 Helmer Kaolin

10 XX Saggar Clay

10 Nepheline Syenite

Top row, 3rd tile from left is #5902 a Chris Staley slip also on Windsor porcelain.

10.5 Custer feldspar

10.5 Talc

21.0 Ball Clay

32.6 EPK

26.3 Silica

ADD: 15% Rutile

Top row far right tile is #5898 is a slip . I tested this  on at least 3 bodies. The body shown is GMix from Georgies in Portland. The slip is a brighter and cleaner green on my Windsor porcelain  tile; but it was nice on all the bodies.

50 Nepheline Syenite

50 Kentucky OM#4 Ball Clay

ADD:  1.5% Cobalt oxide, 10% Rutile

Second row from top, first tile on left  is  #5891 slip.  The clay is AMX, come  reclaimed clay which was a mixture of Amador and  other studio clays.

 70 Grolleg

30 Nepheline Syenite

Second row from top, 2nd tile from left is the same (#5891) slip  on my #8 clay body test.

Second row from top, 3rd tile from left is # 2993 Baur  Orange slip (good for wood or salt) on my #17 clay body test.

41.9 EPK

41.9 Kentucky OM#4 Ball Clay

  5.7 Borax

10.5 Zircopax

Second row from top, far right tile is #2993 Baur Orange on Windsor porcelain. (see recipe above)

Third row from top far left tile is #167 Shaner  Yellow Red, on my #1 clay body test. This is a glaze that I have also used in C10 R gas firings where it is a light yellow with tiny red specks.

 49  Custer Feldspar

 20 Whiting

   4 Talc

   4 Bone Ash

  23 Zircopax

ADD: IRON OXIDE 4%,

Third row from the top 2nd tile from the left is #6670B June Perry Chun,  on  Tom Turner porcelain. This is also a C10R glaze that I used in gas firings. The recipe crazed in my gas firing, and I have revised it but I'm putting the original here, because I think it's the one I used in this firing.

 7.85 Dolomite

 4.55 Whiting

 1.49 Zinc Oxide

30.22 Kingman Feldspar

 4.71 Grolleg Kaolin

Color B: Add: Rutile 4%, Yellow Ochre 3.5%, 0.54% Tin Oxide

Third row from the top 3rd tile from the left is #5872 D June Perry Oribe, on Tom Turner porcelain.

37.14 Custer Feldspar

20.41 Silica

16.79 Whiting

 5.86 Talc

19.00 EPK

    .79 Bone Ash

Color D: Add 6.2% Copper Carbonate, 0.5% Cobalt carbonate

***PLEASE NOTE:  This would not be a safe glaze to use for any pot that would come in contact with food. There is too much copper in it; but it's a lovely, dark, rich green, that would be suitable for decorative items.

Third row from the top far right tile is #2299C on my #1 clay body test.

Fourth row from the top, far left is #171 plum glaze, on my #9 clay body test. This is a glaze I also use in C10 R. gas firings.

4500 Custer Feldspar

1300 Whiting

2800 Silica

1100 EPK

 776 Red Iron Oxide

Fourth row from the top 2nd tile from the left is #1009  a Jane Hamlyn glaze, subbing OM#4 ball  clay for AT ball clay. This will run a bit at C 10 if you're firing to full cone ten you might want to add about 5-10 more grams of a combination of the  ball clay and silica.

 24 Custer Feldspar

18 Whiting

30 Kentucky OM#4 Ball Clay

30 Silica

  5 Red Iron Oxide

Fourth row from the top, 3rd tile from the left is #3148 Jeff Oestreich Shino, on Windsor porcelain. The darker area has a 2% Red Iron slip underneath. You can see some nice carbon trapping on this tile. This was one of the best soda/salt Shino recipes.

40 Nepheline Syenite

30 Spodumene

17 Kentucky OM#4 Ball Clay

 5 EPK

 8 Soda Ash

Fourth row from the top, far right tile is #4052 on Soldate 60 stoneware. it is a slip composed of 80% EPK, 20% Nepheline Syenite.
