Anime Home Page
This anime was created by Osamu Tezuka. There are three stories about Unico available in Japan. I could see only one, which I discovered now to be the ever first Unico anime (Pilot Version). The other two are about an evil puppet magician (the episode is named "Unico on the Island of Magic" according to an Internet navigator), who wants to turn everyone into puppets, and about a kitten that is changed to a little girl (I have just collected material about this one).
These anime presents the adventures of a child unicorn, cursed to live alone by a jealous goddess. With no memory of his own past, he wanders alone in mysterious worlds. Due to my poor Japanese understanding, some parts may sound too vague or even erroneous. Please send me an E-Mail if you find something wrong.
The Black Cloud Story Summary
The little unicorn wakes up, completely alone, in a gray forest. He walks for a long time before finding another living being, a giant hawk, who tries to make him his supper. The little unicorn escapes, hiding himself in a sewer tube.
A mouse enters the tube, carrying small pieces of food in a bag. He gives the unicorn almost all he's carrying, what is very few. Following the mouse, he finds his home, a small hole in a wall, where he has to care for many small mice. The mouse gives the crying children the last piece of food, what is not enough. The little unicorn feels guilty for having ate their food and, involuntarily, makes a few of his magic spark from his horn, materializing a cake to the children.
The hole in the wall leads to a small room, where a girl lives with her father. She is very sick so she never walks out of the house. When she sees the small unicorn, she asks him to come closer. The little unicorn has no name, so she calls him "Unico". The girl takes a story book, opens it and shows him a picture of a beautiful winged unicorn, flying among the clouds.
The girl's father comes back. The girl knows he won't let her have any pet, because they are very poor and couldn't feed any, then she hides the little unicorn under her bed. That, of course, doesn't avoid her father to find him. She tries to run after Unico, but collapses after a few steps outside the house. When the girl wakes up, she sees her father and the unicorn by her side.
When the girl's father gets out of the small house, she tells Unico why the world is so decayed. A big and black cloud is covering it all. Unico says her he will fight against the black cloud and cure her desease.
Unico discovers the source of the black cloud that is destroying the world, the high chimneys of a huge factory. His magical powers appear once more and he puts the whole building down.
When he is going back to the little girl's house, he is found by a wind spirit. She says he must leave that world. Unico refuses because his friend is very sick and needs his help. The wind spirit tells him the story of his life. He lived among the gods and was loved by most of them, except by a jealous goddess. So, the wind spirit took him to that world, where the angry goddess wouldn't be able to find him. But now he has to leave and go to another world.
The wind spirit takes Unico and flies away. He cries and implores her to let him save the little girl. She puts him back to the ground and gives him a branch of a magical tree. Unico runs to the little girl's house and cures her illness. The wind spirit then takes him away.
The girl wakes up, completely recovered and asks the little mouse where Unico is, but he doesn't answer, very sad. Far away from there, in a dark and foggy forest of dead trees, Unico wakes up and calls for anyone, but nobody answers. He's alone again, in a mysterious world.
