More Unicorns in Live Action Movies
- Cast a Deadly Spell: this movie presents a north-american city
in the beginning of the 20th century, but with something different, magic
is a common reallity there. A unicorn appears, pursued by a virgin woman.
Later, she appears with her clothes stained with blood, supposedly from
the unicorn. The movie is a parody of noir movies with story based
on terror stories of H. P. Lovecraft. Though the movie can be enjoyable to
people that have already read Lovecraft's stories, the insinuation that a
unicorn had died is extremly disgusting.
- The NeverEnding
Story: in the beginning of the movie, the main character, Bastian,
is having his breakfast. His father says that the child's teacher had
complained that he has been absent-minded, he had been caught drawing horses
in his notebook. Bastian replies they were unicorns, not horses...
- Contact: in the
bedroom of Eleanor, the main character, as a child, there is a picture of a
unicorn on the wall, at the head of the bed. It was my impression that,
later on the movie, she started to look like a unicorn, in her
manners, in her ways...
- The Twilight Zone: in the 1980's episodes, the opening showed
a unicorn's image inside a crystal ball.
- Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone: they killed a unicorn,
those bastards...! No, I really didn't like the movie, not because they
killed some unicorns (er, well, I have to admit that put the butterflies
in my stomach in a frenzy), but because it is too stereotyped to my liking...
- Astérix et Obélix contre César: the druid
uses a two headed unicorn milk to produce a special potion to fight the
roman troops.
- Phenomenon: George Malley, the main character, makes a quick
list of mammals, in increasing alphabetical order, including
"unicorn" in it...
- Beast Master (TV series): "The Last Unicorns"
present some unicorns (that also appear in the series opening sequence).
The story is strange, the solution bizarre, but it has something...
- The Nanny (TV series): in the episode "Fran-Lite", the
nanny replies to a good-night that, if she has some luck left, she will
dream with a unicorn...
- Are You Afraid of The Dark? (TV series): in the episode
"The Tale of The Silver Sight", there is a unicorn head in
bronze in an old house, where the guys get the first piece of the
silver sight.
- Murder By Night (teleplay): there is a unicorn jewel in
the movie, I only realized it in the end of the movie, so I don't
know if it appears earlier in the story...
- Spin City (TV series): on the episode "Rain on My
Charades", the mayor's daughter destroys a plush unicorn he had
bought her after he antagonizes her...
More Unicorns in Animation Movies
-
Mahou No Tenshi Creamy Mami (Magical Angel Creamy Mami):
an anime series about a
girl that receives special powers from an alien. In the episode
"Toki No Nemuru Mori" (Time's Sleep Forest) she meets
a girl called Miya that lives in an enchanted forest, where time is
meaningless...
- The Real Ghostbusters: this animation
series is based on the movie
Ghostbusters. It's a
production with American scripts and Japanese animations. In the episode
"Hard Knight's Day", an ancient warrior reincarnates
from a tapestry. Touching other tapestries with his sword, he
brings their characters to life, including some tapestries of unicorns. The
ghostbusters are trying to fight the ancient warrior and his allies, but
they are only four against hundreds of warriors and creatures. Trying to
run away, they find the unicorns, whom help them in their fight. One of the
ghostbusters asks to another how he knew the unicorns would help them, to
which the other replies that someone like that ancient warrior should have
some enemy. I don't know who wrote that episode's script, but it really got
the "unicorn's spirit". I really love that series.
- Dungeons & Dragons: this American series is based on the
homonymous RPG. The stories are
centered in a group of youngsters that have been carried to a strange world
of sorcery and monsters, where they find a baby unicorn, named Uni, whom
joins the group in its adventures. In one episode (I think it was named
"The Valley of The Unicorns"), the group finds the secret valley
where the unicorns live. The series has good and bad stories.
Unfortunatelly, that about the secret valley is not one of the best. The
unicorns have just a background role in that plot.
- The Simpsons:
in the episode "Brush with Greatness", Marge Simpson
restarts to paint and, in a contest, wins the first prize. One
of the paintings in the contest presented a unicorn asking
"Why?", standing on a deserted land, covered with junk.
In another episode, "Rosebud", Mr. Burns receives a unicorn as
a present, amongst other treasures... In "Simpsons' Bible
Stories", a unicorn named Garry dies exhausted trying to help
Marge to get back into Eden...
- Wild Fire: this North-American series has Peter S. Beagle, the
author of The Last Unicorn, as
creative consultant. In one episode, all horses are being charmed and
captured by the evil sorceress. When the enchantment is broken, the horses
are set free. Among them are also some unicorns. I wonder who had the idea
of putting the unicorns there. Do they think unicorns are horses with a
horn? I didn't like the joke.
- Thundercats: in the episode "The Terror of Hammerhand",
the thundercats help a group of unicorns against a gang of pirates, self
called "Berserkers". What is interesting about these unicorns
is that they actually do look like unicorns, not horses with horns, they
even have cloved hooves. Of course, the unicorns are depicted a little
too clumsy, or else they wouldn't be in any danger against a few pitates
and there wouldn't be any story to be told. Something interesting about
this cartoon series, it was produced by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules
Bass, the same that produced "The
Last Unicorn" animated movie.
- There is an American series about unicorns, but I don't know its name (I
missed its opening and I only watched the first episode). The main unicorn
character is a female unicorn that was born with wings (of course, she is
deride by the other unicorns for being different). The main human character
is a princess, whom has a magical crystal that can only be used by the
winged unicorn and her, together of course, giving both special powers.
There is also an evil sorceress and some dangerous artifacts that give her
extreme powers and can, of course, destroy the world. Did I forget anything?
Oh, yes, of course, the happy ending. When you start to watch it, the first
thing you realize is that it will have an extremely happy ending, the kind
that will give the moralists and censors hours of wonderful sleep. Of
course, you are right, the unicorns are painted as one-horned horses, how
did you guess that...?
- Rupert: this series present the adventures of Rupert, a young
bear (anthropomorphic) in a land of magic and fantasy (you can't tell
when or where one starts and the other ends). Amongst his wanders, he
comes to meet some unicorns in trouble, pursued by a young and evil
wizard, helped by a giant and a gryphon. The only unicorn not captured is
a young female, too scared to fight back, but, of course, the young hero
is there to help.
- Cats Don't Dance: this is a story about a cat that goes to
Hollywood, dreaming about starring in musicals. A couple of unicorns
appear in a diluvian musical... Nyan...
Unicorns Everywhere
- There is a Japanese game named "Area 88", based on a
manga. The protagonists are members of a squadron, whose symbol is a
"flaming unicorn", a unicorn with burning fire instead of manes
and hair. Outside Japan, the game is named "U.N. Squadron". The
same kind of flaming unicorn appears in "Pokemon"
anime, based on another Japanese game
called "Pocket Monster" (in Japanese, poketto monsuta-,
abbreviated to poke mon).
- The video clip to the song "Return To Innocence", by Enigma,
has a white unicorn, riding "back" to the wild (you will
understand when you watch it).
- Another video clip, to a version of the song
"I Will Survive", performed
by a group named "Cake" (album "Fashion Nugget"),
shows a series of crystal animals along the film. In the very beginning,
it presents a prancing unicorn...
- There is a version of the song "The Last Unicorn", from
"The Last Unicorn" animated
movie, played by a certain "In Mood", sung by Juliette.
- Somebody wearing a unicorn mask appears in the song of the group
"Echo And The Bunnymen" titled "Bring On The Dancing
Horses", from the album "Songs To Learn And Sing".
