My Proficiencies—Standard VII

Technology Applications

 

Standard VII.   The desktop publishing teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, and Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in desktop publishing, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

 

7.1s

I am knowledgeable of desktop publishing terminology, such as layout, design, screens, contrast, washout, flush, indent, text wrap, kerning, widows, etc.

7.2s

I am able to use such input devices as a scanner, digital camera, etc. for the creation of desktop publishing products.

7.3s

I am able to use digital keyboarding standards in word processing such as one space after punctuation, the use of em/en dashes, and smart quotation marks, as they apply to the production of desktop publishing documents.  These standards can be located online at http://www.tcet.unt.edu/START/instruct/general/kb-dks.htm

I am proficient in manipulating, morphing, and editing graphics and text that belongs to another individual, with their permission, without destroying the quality of the property, therefore, modeling respect for the idea or concept of the property.

I am proficient in recognizing and analyzing the impact of desktop publishing on society, i.e. how persuasiveness, marketing and point of view can affect sales, level of readership, and influence audience reactions.

I know when to use .jpg formats as opposed to .gif formats when conserving memory and retaining the quality of images used in desktop publishing products.

I am proficient in the acquisition of print and digital information from a variety of electronic resources; I know how to cite sources in MLA and ADA formats.  As to the acquisition of digital images, I use my own 99% of the time.  I am aware of copyright laws concerning the use of printed and digital information for educational and private purposes.

I am proficient in navigating and accessing information from local area networks, wide area networks, the Internet, and intranets.  I can research library databases, utilize Internet search engines, etc.

I am proficient in the acquisition and editing, by downloading, copying and pasting, recording and burning CDs, of information in various electronic formats, including text, audio, video, and graphics, always remembering to cite my sources.

I am proficient in importing and exporting elements from one program to another, such as images from Adobe PhotoShop or Macromedia Fireworks to Microsoft Publisher, word documents from Microsoft Word to Adobe PageMaker or Microsoft Publisher, and documents from Microsoft Publisher to Microsoft FrontPage.

I am proficient in evaluating acquired information that is not my own by analyzing and/or researching the source of the information.

I am proficient in testing the accuracy and validity of acquired information that is not my own by viewing the credibility of the source.  For example, information acquired from published journals is likely to be more accurate and valid than information acquired from magazines.

I am able to incorporate desktop publishing activities into the curriculum, in order to provide enrichment and stress the basic foundations of any subject matter.

I am proficient in the identification of the tasks necessary to complete a project and then designing the overall layout of the project by using tools such as word processing, indexing, graphics, and drawing programs to complete the tasks.

I am proficient in the use of desktop publishing program productivity tools, such as cut and paste, move, copy, and spell check to edit text.

I am proficient in the design of desktop publishing documents, including the selection of type, font, size, style and alignment of text most appropriate for each individual project.

As an Art teacher, I am more than proficient in the basic elements of design and am able to apply them to the printed page, including text, graphics, headlines, and the use of white space.

For training and teaching purposes, I am able to use terms related to typography, including categories of type, like Arial, Times New Roman, Tahoma, Tempus Sans, etc to describe contrasts in font styles and how they relate to the overall appearance of desktop publishing documents.

I am proficient in using the elements of page design in order to create a visually appealing document that successfully communicates the intended purpose.

I am proficient in the comparison and contrast of various elements of visual composition of specific documents.  By identifying the purpose and intended audience of the product, I can compare the effects of using harmony and balance or discord and drama within the composition of the product.

I am proficient in the creation and use of a master template for certain repetitive tasks; I also understand the importance and necessity for such items.

I am proficient in the basic measurement of typefaces, regarding inches and picas.  I can also apply this knowledge to layouts, to the creation of master templates, and to paste-ups.

I am proficient in the use of various type techniques as graphic elements, such as drop caps, decorative letters to begin a paragraph, embedded text frames, and tools to show emphasis in desired texts.

As an Art teacher, I am more than proficient in apply the principles of color and color theory to communicate certain moods in products, depending on the target audience.

As an Art teacher, I am more than proficient in the use of the basic principles of design in any application or creation of any product.  I know how to always consider such things as balance, contrast, consistence, repetition, proximity, etc. when designing desktop publishing documents as well as anything else.

As an Art teacher, I am naturally proficient in the identification and analysis of pictorial qualities in a design, such as shape, form, texture, pattern, and how they help each other to create visual unity and desired effects in a publication.
