Definately Maybe
A soon-to-be-divorced political consultant has to answer some hard questions from his 11-year-old daughter as he explains his past relationships.
Cast:
Ryan Reynolds, Abigail Breslin, Derek Luke, Isla Fisher, Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz & Kevin Kline.
Director: Adam Brooks
A thirtysomething Manhattan dad is in the midst of a divorce when his 10-year-old daughter, Maya, starts to question him about his life before marriage. Maya wants to know absolutely everything about how her parents met and fell in love: Will's story begins in 1992, as a young, starry-eyed aspiring politician who moves to New York from Wisconsin in order to work on the presidential campaign.
For Maya, Will relives his past as an idealistic young man learning the 'ins' and 'outs' of big city politics, and recounts the history of his romantic relationships with three very different women. Will hopelessly attempts a gentler version of his story for his daughter, and changes the names so Maya has to guess who is the woman her father finally married. Is her mother Will's college sweetheart, the dependable girl next door Emily? Is she his longtime best friend and confidante, the apolitical April? Or is she the free-spirited but ambitious journalist Summer? As Maya puts together the pieces of her dad's romantic puzzle, she begins to understand that love is not so simple or easy.
And as Will tells her his tale, Maya helps him to understand that it's definitely never too late to go back--and maybe even possible to find a happy ending.
Comedy, 1 hr. 51 min, PG-13
ATKBO Review
William Hayes (Ryan Reynolds) has just received divorce papers from his wife, meanwhile his daughter Maya (Abigail Breslin) wants to know how her parents meet. William then agrees to tell her the his story but decides to put a twist on it by getting Maya to pick which of his three loves would become to be her mother.
He will start his story in 1992 will go through to 1997, where he will meet his three loves of his life. Emily (Elizabeth Banks) his college sweetheart, April (Isla Fischer) a work colleague while working in Clinton campaign and Summer (Rachel Weisz) a writer and Emily’s college roommate. Through the film their will be highs and lows in both his career and love life.
Will Maya guess right who’s her mama? Will his past come back in the future?
Reynolds continues to surprise many coming from and still dabbling in gross out comedies to becoming a solid romantic lead. His charisma and his sarcastic nature again shines through here and this role will be one of his most known of his career.
Breslin seem to have been riding her success of Little Miss Sunshine during this film as she has a flood load of releases coming out. In hindsight it probably was a good call, but believe an unknown could have made the film a tad better.
Of the female leads Isla Fisher finally puts together a complete performance and steals the show, but I’m biased.
Despite labelled a romantic comedy, it does go beyond the typical story and is a winner in both sexes eyes.
