ATKBO Review

The film revolves around best friends Tom (Patrick Dempsey), a playboy of types who has certain dating rules so he doesn’t get too attached and Hannah (Michelle Monaghan), a bookworm type who knows and loves all of Tom’s flawed characteristics. The two meet a decade ago during their college years in a very interesting way and have been friends since and have regular meet and great coffee dates every Sunday.
However Hannah mentions she is going to Scotland for work for the next six weeks. The two still try to communicate with one another during that period but find it difficult due to time zones. During this time, Tom seems to be having Hannah withdraw and is finding it hard to go about his normal sleazy ways as none of his dates come close to his ones with Hannah so he comes to a decision that Hannah is the one. Meanwhile Hannah has met her prince charming in Scotland, and is bringing him back to the states to meet Tom.
On Hannah’s arrival, Tom is moments away from announcing his love to her but is interrupted and heartbroken when she informs him that she’s engaged, and to make things worse she wants him to be her maid of honor. Tom knows he has only weeks to stop the wedding will he be able to? will Tom and Hannah still be friends?

Despite its obvious similarities to other familiar films in its genre, Maid of Honor does entertain and shows heart. What the film lacks in originality makes up for with very talented and well cast leads. Both Dempsey and Monaghan drag this somewhat below par romcom to decent and watchable for both sexes. Its new intuitive side plots like the coffee collar and blogger do it justice but the cliché heir to the throne, mistaken cheat scene and sporting challenges do hurt it. All in all, it’s fine but more suitable for a snuggle up dvd night.
