April 9: Ryan Reynolds opens to number 1 on the kiwi box office this week with the help of four beautiful and talented girls in Definately Maybe. Co staring Isla Fisher, Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz and "Little Miss Sunshine's" Abigail Breslin, Definately, did surprised grossed close to $250k in its first week of release in 40 screens nationwide which also had the weeks top average of $6,154 per screen. The film revolves around Reynolds character's life and loves prior to his daughter (Breslin) birth, who asks how her parents fell in love. Reynolds tells her his life story and challenges his daughter to pick which of his loves was her mother.
The young teen crowd showed up to see the martial arts flick Never Back Down which opened in the number 2 spot for the week with just over 200k shown in the same amount of screens as definately. Not packing too much of a punch with regards to the young unknown cast, with only "Blood Diamonds" Djimon Hounsou the recognisable face - The flick still managed to score with its targeted audience.
Dropping just a spot from last week, Step up 2 now in its 4th week dropped a third of its audience in what was expected with the release of "Never Back Down" another teen oriented film. Rambo slipped 3 spots from the top during the week while Bucket List was given new life which added a third of its screens this week jumping from 11th to 5th in one week. Of note of the rest, Vantage Point lost close to half its audience and Shutter over half as both lost 13 pay dates during the week in just their 3rd and 4th week.
