April 16: Will Ferrell shoots to the top of the kiwi box office this week with help from his Tropics team mates Woody Harreson, Andre 3000 Benjamin and Deray Davis (MTV's Wild'n Out). Semi-Pro slammed down close to 300k in its first weekend with an impressive 6,667 average per theatre despite poor reviews. The lack of direct competition should see the flick bring in good numbers through the school holiday period.
Crawling into the second spot was the Spiderwick Chronicles, which hoped it could get its foot into the door before the sleuth of new films targeting kids flood into kiwi cinemas. Its 223k seemed a bit poultry for its 64 pay dates but with a Mac Donald’s tie in, the early jump on the crowd, word of mouth and positive reviews all should boost its chances for next week.
Last weeks champ, Definitely Maybe held over nicely with only a small 20% drop and near 5k average. It however will face some tough competition from now on as this week’s third new release, Lars and the Real Girl packed out its limited cinemas with individual takings of 10,489 totalling 105k, good enough for sixth place.
The last of the weeks new offerings was the teen dance drama, How She Move which stepped into fourth spot and danced to the beat of 185k with a very healthy 5,805k per screen. Step up 2, definitely felt its rival’s entrance as it slipped six spots this week and dropped over half its audience.
Of note of the rest both The Eye and 10,000 BC took a beating losing 13 locations and dropping 60% whereas Gone Baby Gone added 50k for 12th but was 6th per theatre average. Meanwhile No Country for Old Men, which had the least drop over, itched its way closer to the one million dollar mark.
