3 May: Holding onto the top spot for its second consecutive week was Dr. Seuss’s Horton Hears a who which has now takings of just under 1.7m in its two weeks of release. Super Hero Movie was the school holidays big surprise hit with a very impressive opening week of 426k perhaps due to the lack of flicks for the older kids despite its poor reviews and worse word of mouth. With one week of holidays remaining the pic will need this week to count as from next week it should fall flat and fast. Spiderwick Chronicles dropped one place this week to third but did manage to cross the million dollar mark.
Nim’s Island was the week’s biggest gainer this week with a staggering 55% on top of its debut week. Street Kings, in its second release dropped just 29% meanwhile Semi-Pro continued to fall down the chart to eighth with a 41% drop. The second highest new release, The Painted Veil managed a respectable 154k for seventh and was the highest per theatre average of the top 10 with around 12k average.
Two concert films were released and both held the top two average spots – the acclaimed U2 3D with 20k and Hannah Montana 3D scored 28k in its encore. The last of this weeks new releases, teen comedy Sydney White took in an appalling 108k a miserable 2.7k average despite showing in 44 cinemas. The poor turnout could be contributed to the lack of promotion and the fact it was released half a year ago in the states.

Next Week, the US summer block buster season blasts off and we down here are lucky enough to see the first of them one day earlier. Iron man will make use of the last week of school holidays to kick off its cinematic run before the rest of the pack start flooding in. It will take out first spot but it may find it hard to make a million in its first week of release, it is sure to make at least two million during its run however.
For the opposite sex this week they will be catered to two new films more suitable with both Dan in Real Life and Maid of Honor both sneaking into cinemas nationwide to battle with the cinemas latest super hero.
