Phases

Xander and Cordelia are making out in Cordy's car when they are interrupted by the vicious attack of a werewolf. Giles is intigued by the idea of a werewolf in Sunnydale-"one of the classics"-but intrigue turns to concern as he and Buffy encounter a hunter named Cain who wants to kill the werewolf for its pelt, and then a Sunnydale High student named Theresa is found dead. As the Slayerettes try to figure out who the werewolf might be-Xander's theory that it's Larry, one of the school jocks, turns out to be very erroneous-Willow tries to determine why Oz is acting so weird. When she goes to his house to confront him, she finds him transforming into a werewolf. Buffy, Giles, and Willow manage to bring the werewolf down and keep Cain from killing Oz.

Oz and Willow have started dating(the episode begins with them discussing the movie they went to the previous night), but Willow is frustrated that he hasn't made a further move. At the end, after Oz's lycanthropy is revealed, they decide to keep the relationship going, and they have their first kiss which Willow initiates. Buffy is still smarting from Angel's reversion to type. When she learns that Theresa'a death was caused not by the werewolf, but by Angel-confirmed when Theresa rises as a vampire and tells her that Angel says hi-Buffy finds comfort in Xander's arms briefly before leaving, causing the latter to mutter, "Oh, no, my life's not too complicated". Meanwhile, Xander and Cordelia's relationship continues apace, thus promoting a catty Willow: "What's his number? Oh yeah:1-800-I'm-dating-a-skanky-ho". Despite this, Willow and Cordy find themselves bonding in the Bronze over the inadequacies of the men in their lives. Giles appears to be having trouble dealing with Jenny's betrayal, as his behavior is slightly off throughout the ordeal-he even laughs at one of Xander's jokes.

Oz fist discovers that he is a werewolf in this episode. Oz also notices the moving eyes of the cheerleader trophy("The Witch"). Xander cites his temporary infusion with the spirit of a hyena as evidence that he understands where the werewolf is coming from("The Pack"); by doing so, he also inadvertentlt reveals that he does, in fact, remeber that entire experience, despite his claims at the end of that episode.
