NEWBORN CARE

WE HAVE THIS........AMAZING NEWBORN, HELP WHAT DO WE DO. ALL THE BABY WANTS TO DO IS NURSE.......I NEVER GET ANY SLEEP The birth is over, you are now totally in love with this new baby but......then reality checks in and you realize how time consumning this little one is. This precious baby needs to be nursed every 2 hours and needs your constant attention. Whew!! But it is worth it all.

What I thought I would do with this page and discuss some of the most common questions I get from my clients.

After a birth the baby might have a cone head similar to what you see on TV. This is normal and is back to a normal head within a day. On the top of the head is a soft spot and there is also one found in the back of the head. This allows the baby's head to mold and also to allow the baby's head and brain to grow after the birth.

The baby might or might not lose their hair (if they have any). You might see that the area where the baby rest his/her head might be more bald after a few weeks, but I have never seen hair just fall out.

The baby might have a rash that comes and goes. It looks very similar to flea bites. This is very normal and I noticed with my own children that I noticed the rash after I breastfeed.

Some baby's have a rash on the face which can become infected. We call this newborn acne. If it is oozing or rash seems to be getting worse, call your healthcare provider to help discern if you need to use some herb teas on it. As with any rash, fresh air and sunlight can really help.

Little boys who are not circumcised can have their penis become red and inflamed; bath them, do not retract the skin. I have used castor oil packs. They work wonderful. My advice is to have a healthcare provider look at it to evaluate it.

Little girls can have some spotting from their vagina. They are reacting to their mother's hormone. They can also have enlarged breasts.

You can tell if the baby is hearing by how they react to noise. If you have a concern, again have you healthcare provider evaluate your baby.

The newborn can see your face when he/she is breastfeeding. They say that at the age of 6 months they have 20/20 vision. Babies like to look at black and white squares, foreheads, and faces. So fill their room up with happy faces and happy sounds.

Breastfeeding questions will be answered on the breastfeeding page. Babies need to nurse about every two hours. Breastmilk is predigested so only needs to be digested for about two hours. That is why breastfeeding babies need to eat more often then cow or formula feed babies do.

You can not spoil a baby. I feel that we need to interact a lot with the baby so God gave the baby a large appetite and a STRONG desire to suck. At times I feel like I am a living pacifier.
